Need help upgrading (1500~Budget)

Soyaman

Hey guys!

I've been following Linus for quite a while on the youtoobes and I'm now looking to upgrade my baby. However being clueless I figured I'd come here for help as Linus always seems to praise his community.

So my current situation/set-up is as following:

GTX 760 4GB superclocked EVGA.

I7 920, 2.66~GHz

850 PSU - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FG9FZS2?psc=1

With a Acer Aspire M7720 case.

So I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and case.

That obviously includes Memory, Air Cooling & Motherboard.

I have a budget of 1500~ which can be pushed to 1700. (USD)

So yeah.. I want to "future" proof my computer. I've been running this setup for 9 years and my CPU is holding me back significantly. I reckon I'll upgrade my GPU a lot in the future however I'd like you guys opinion as to which CPU and Motherboard which would be the best choice here.

My friends suggested something in the Intel broadwell series which I believe is the new CPUs just released. I'm unsure whether to get 6 or 4 cores.

I believe 6 cores is possibly better for future gaming but it may take many years before that's even a reality and my CPU may be just as outdated as my current one is now when that happens.

Of course this is just me speculating so I'll let you guys take over xD

My preference is Intel simply due to the fact that my CPU hasn't failed me in 9 years, I'd like Hyperthreading and a silent air cooler / case if such thing exists. Space is not really a problem either.

I'll also be buying these parts where available.

I live in Denmark so I'll have to look about where mentioned parts will be sold, but I believe Newegg ships EU so it's generally not a problem.

Thanks a lot beforehand.

-Soya.

Edit:

Almost forgot.

It'll be used for extensive gaming.

A reasonable CPU is preferred as I'll be playing very CPU intensive games such as ArmA3 and Star Citizen (Whenever that comes out xD)

stick with 1366, get a 980x if you can find one for under $300

How much could you sell your current PC for ?

idk how good a i7 980x is compared to a modern cpu

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

Good question.

I've really no intention of selling my current parts as they're very, very old.

Besides, you never know when you'll need extra spare parts :)

True,

but if you could get an extra 200$ for your build, why not ? (that 760 is still worth a bit )

Would you preffer spending more and getting a 5820k or going for the more budget friendly i5 ? the 5820k is a six core, so it would not need to be swapped out for a while.

Well I could probably push the budget up to 2000 if need be.

However I'd like to keep my GPU for now as it does the job quite well.

I do however wish to replace it within a year or two but for now my main focus is motherboard and CPU :)

Now I do feel a six core is the better option as future games might require more cores.

At the same time I also really need a "powerful" CPU to run ArmA3 which is poorly optimised (runs heavy on a single core).

So it'd depend how much power I sacrifice to get six cores.

But yeah, as I mentioned.

I'm a little bit clueless so any guidance is very much appreciated, but the goal is to get a strong CPU which will last 4 maybe 6 years.

It's worth mentioning though it doesn't -have- to be 6 cores, I'm just curious if it's worth it yet to get 6 over 4.

Oh, and I don't plan on SLI-ing.

I have a 5820k and Arma 3 runs fine, OC'ing the 5820k to 4,3ghz is as good as any i5 at 4,3ghz on a single thread.

2000k is fine for only a CPU-mobo-ram-case-psu-storage ( 2k is more than I spent on my entire pc :P )

I'l put together a build :D

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to mention.

I got a Corsair 850 gold PSU

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FG9FZS2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

One of those.

I believe it should suffice.

I also have a 3TB storage (somehow only 2 TB present but I'll get to that when I need it xD) and an SSD so storage is not a problem either. I'll probably need a bigger SSD seperate for specific games. I'm thinking 480 GB. - However I'll probably buy the SSD at a later date if it compromises the value of other components, I'm far from needing more storage.

The RM850i is a more modern version of the RM 850 .

Also, here you're well under budget,

the SSD is one of the fastest around, with about a GB/s read and write,

the cooler looks pretty, although you could get better fans for it

Thank you!

I'm not necessarily looking to spend the entire budget as anything left over will be saved for a future GPU and lots of food

So I guess I could take off the PSU or is the upgrade necessary?

Also in terms of Motherboard I see the X99 a lot but I don't know much about it, I assume it's one of the newer ones since it's mentioned so much correct?

Also what's up with Water Cooling?

This'll be my first "built" PC so sorry if I ask too many questions

Also in regards to memory what's the difference between DDR4 and 3? Price to performance is it worth getting 4?

I know I've got a high budget but really it's just to be safe. Price to performance is still somewhat important to me as I'd rather not spend 50% extra just to get 5% extra performance xD

Otherwise the list looks quite reasonable.

My friends has also mentioned 5920k so chances of me picking that is up quite high.

I didn't catch that you already had a RM850, keep it.

Watercooling makes it look good ( I know it's superficial but hey ;D ) and keeps the cpu cool so you can overclock. You can go air cooling if you want.

Here is a cheaper build : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/XYypkL

Hey.

I greatly appreciate the help.

I took some time to look around various websites that ship to my country and pricing and I ended up with a build 300 dollars cheaper so I ended up adding a 150 SSD so I've saved 150 dollars essentially.

However I'd like to get a second opinion to see if I made any noob mistakes or if I missed something vital that other more expensive parts might've had.
