3D intensive games causing PC freeze

Every game that is graphics intensive is freezing and forces me to hard reset. I used to be able to get about 10-30min of gameplay before freezes, but now I'd be lucky to get a couple of minutes. Games like FTL or Binding of Isaac, don't seem to have this issue.

These are tests I have already performed:

  • memTest86
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
  • Drive Error Check
  • Verify integrity of game files
  • Underclock and overclock GPU
  • Prime95
  • FurMark
  • 3DMarK

All of these tests have passed with no errors or freezing. BTW all drivers and BIOS are up to date.

Any help with this would be awesome, I've had this issue for over a year now but have been too busy to get the bottom of the problem.

The best thing you can do is try another GPU/try that GPU in another machine.

Doing a stability test now. Is GPU usage supposed to continuously go up and down?

You're using Aida64 to stress the GPU? Then no, it's supposed to be pinned at 99-100%

Hey PooneyL4,

Have you checked Windows Event Log to see the reason for the restarts?
I'd test the parts on another computer if possible, try another GPU on yours and possibly contact the support of the GPU manufacturer and ask how to properly test it and see if the problem is there. Have you checked your temps? Are all the fans spinning properly? Have you cleaned your computer from dust? I'd run diagnostic tools over the storage drives. For the WD Black I'd use WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic jsut to be on the safe side that it works properly: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=dd3jv0

Hi Captain_WD

Thanks for the input, I've checked out the event log and even had it running on my second monitor whilst gaming and unfortunately nothing irregular has shown up. My temps have also been normal with the gpu around 70 and cpu around 60 whilst under load (btw this is a itx system). All the fans are spinning and I recently cleaned out dust from the system a couple of days ago. I'm going to test the gpu on another system tomorrow so hopefully i can figure out if that's the culprit. I just used the wd data lifeguard diagnostic and there's no problems with the wd black.

Do test the GPU and post back with the results. :)
