HDD problem.

Guest

My storage HDD is being a bit weird. It makes a single clicking sound. It seems like it is turning it self off or going into a sleep mode. The reason I'm asking is because if I'm not saving or making changes to the drive for a while I'll hear the single click when I try to access it. Defraggler says the drive health is good. Does the click mean I need a new storage HDD?

Hey ariviosa,

Judging by the S.M.A.R.T. status, the drive appears well and healthy. Do you by any chance have enabled a power-saving feature that spins the drive down? This might be the cause of the single click when the drive spins up and the head hovers over the platter. If the utility says it's OK, it should be OK. I would use the one provided by the manufacturer and see what it says. Also do try the drive on another computer and see if the sounds persist.

The drive was from a previous build it did the same thing as well but the thing that is bugging me is I recently just re-installed my OS and it only started happening after the re-install, ever since I pulled the drive from the old build it hasn't done that till now.

I would check the power options and see what is the set time for the drive to spin down or park its head. I'd think this is what the sound is being produced from.
I would contact the manufacturer's support to ask for some advice since the S.M.A.R.T. status indicates that the drive is completely healthy.
