First time attempting water cooling - comments?

Hey guys, I just want to see if anyone will be able to give me some comments on what I'm trying to attempt right now.

Below are the current setup for my PC.

  • CPU
    Intel i7 4960X (Cooled with H105)
  • Motherboard
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Black Edition
  • RAM
    Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133Mhz
  • GPU
nVIDIA GTX Titan X (EVGA SuperClocked)
  • Case
    Cooler Master HAF XM
  • Storage
Samsung 840 EVO 1TB + Seagate 7200 rpm 4TB (not sure if this is the right brand/spec HDD, but its HDD whatever)
  • PSU
Antec High Current Pro 1000W Platinum

Currently thinking of purchasing a Corsair 780T case to do a custom water loop. It is my first attempt so I am sort of lost in what I should do.

I am looking into doing both CPU and GPU cooling. And I may eventually get a second Titan X, so it would be awesome if you can suggest a way to add in a second GPU into the loop without too much hassel, that would be great too.

Thinking of getting some parts from 'ekwb' as I remember hearing their products in some WC videos I have seen so far.

Cost is not too much of concern.

Some suggestions/comments I want to get, but not limited to

1. Is there any examples that I should use as a sample to get a rough idea on what I should do with my setup?

2. Which block is recommended for Titan X? There are many choices even in ekwb.

3a. Trying to see if I should do 2 radiator setup in Corsair 780T. Any reason not to?

3b. Does drive cage need to be completely removed if I want to mount radiator to the front? I do have one HDD so it needs to go somewhere.

I appologize if the post is not very clear. I will make ammendments to it if necessary as comments come in.

Thank you for taking your time to read. I am looking forward to comments.

Hong kong Watercooler? Join the club :P

I'm watercooling in a Fractal Design Define S though. If you'd like some help I could probably be of a bit of assistance. I'm going Hardline with all EKWB parts (ordering off of EK's Webstore). It should run you close to $700 USD. so ~$5500HKD

I'm also in Hong Kong :)

I'll be the one to say it. Check for leaks with tissues when you put your liquid in and run the system for awhile to check there arent any drips from your pipes/fittings.

Sup guys.

ThatCoolBlueKidd, can you list out the things you bought from them? So I can use as a reference?

Ya. One of the things mentioned in the videos I have seen. But thanks for mentioning.

No worries. I'm also curious. Why are you getting a Titan X and not a 980Ti? Considering the card performs near enough the same but is like £/$300 less.

Also why not the jump to X99 if money isnt an issue O.o? Just curious :P

For your case if you want to install a front rad you may need to do a bit of modding to fit it in the 780T. As for the hard drive you could mount it to the bottom of the case directly with a sheet of plexi or shift the cages back to the second mounting point.

I already had a Titan X. Getting 980Ti would mean I would have to get another 980Ti for SLi. And If I'm going to WC, temperature SHOULD be no longer an issue, which should put Titan X at a clear advantage in performance. At least the theory goes. Not sure in practice.

I hadbeen thinking about doing custom loop for a VERY long time, but I just was too lazy to do it. But, after the release of 980Ti, I just had to do something about the temperature of Titan X, as it was basically performing the same way 980Ti does with the temperature limit being hit quite quickly.

For platform upgrade to X99, I just dont see the justification for a jump. The only real performance advantage I will see would be in some video editing (maybe?), and I dont do all that much video editing / other-misc-productivity-related-work. Might as well put that money into getting third Titan X if I have to.

Fair enough reasoning. Yeah your loop will help with that beef of a card haha. Good luck with your build anyways. I'm off to watch videos :P Tag me if you make a build log please, would llove to see what a first timer comes up with ;) *I am too, dont worry.* <3

Here's what I've got:

EK-HD Adapters (10/12mm) (multiple)

EK Supremecy EVO- Acetal

EX-FC980GTX- Acetal

EK-FC980GTX- Backplate

EK RES X3 250

EK XTOP D5PWM- Acetal

EK Coolstream PE360

EK AF Angled G1/4 (multiple)

EK Tube 10/12mm 500mm (2pcs)

EK Ekoolant Pastal

Total came up to $785 USD (including 3 day shipping to Hong Kong).

Hard line isn't recommended for first-time builders though. But the Fractal Design S is a godsend of a case. 150% recommended.

Where about in Hong Kong are you by the way? I'm out in Sai Kung.

Ok will make some updates in the future, when I get on with it. Probably gonna get as much information for now, then gonna do the actual building in a month's time. Work will slow down in about that time.

Hi,Alex from Singapore.

I trying to build my first time water cooling pc.

Below is my hardware.

Cosair 900D Cassie

Asus Rampage V Extreme I7-5960

Asus 980 Matrix Platinum

Ripjaws 3000MHz 16gb ram

Wondering which type of coolants you guys prefer.

I have read quite a lot people recommend the distilled water, like to understand how easy to maintain and how long to I need to maintence it. As some recommend the premix coolants. Need advise.

For distilled water and a kill coil or biocides it should be changed every 12 months max. It is a little easier to maintain compared to colored coolants since it won't stain blocks or rads.

If you want colored coolants and clear tubing Mayhems has some of the best stuff they should be changed regularly around 12months also.

For maintenance it mainly depends on the condition of the loop if thesoft ttubing is discolored or yellowed it should be changed for new stuff and if there is build up in blocks they should be disassembled and scrubbed clean. Rads will require flushing with a vingear solution and rinse out throughly.

Was just wondering, would I be running into temperature issues for my CPU as a result of putting it in a same loop with my GPU?

There would be a lot larger volume of liquid, and there will not be that many situations that I can think of that both CPU and GPU running at full capacity at the same time, so there should not be an issue from what I am imagining. But I haven’t done this before, so I don’t know the true answer to this.

Not really the fluid is moving so fast in the loop the heat will be dissipated through the rads it won't make a bit difference by have separate loops. Having a larger reservoir or volume of liquid will make it have a longer warm up time making it cooler for a while but once warmed up it will reach it's optimal point.

Alright. Thanks.

Would one 240mm/280mm radiator be good enough if I am trying to cool i7 4960X and two Titan X? Or should I look into putting more rads?

At that point if your putting two titan X and a 4960X I would personally go for a triple 360mm and another 240mm or 360mm since a single titan X is pretty crazy at  250W TDP for a silent build.

For minimum amount I would put a thick 480mm rad or four 120mm rad spaces with thick rads.

So does that mean, whatever the configuration is, I should shoot for 480mm total for my current/future build? (eg. 2 X 240mm rads)

Yes but as the minimum amount go for 480mm total radspace with thick rads but more rad space will let you idle the fans and have a silent build even during heavy loads since those GPU's and CPU give off a fairly large amount of heat.

Understood. Thanks for the info. Now I will have some headaches on how the heck I'm going to manage it in the case I have chosen (Corsair 780T). Or maybe I have to change to something else.

Would be awesome If I could do 360mm Front, and 240/280mm on the top, but all cases I see (at least the ones that I like) seem to not allow any spaces for HDD if I want front rad installation.

Anyone got a suggestion on what I should do? Budgetting out the next spendings, I found I cant do them at the same time.

1. Get second Titan X next and get custom loop afterwards

2. Get custom loop next and Titan X afterwards

Hopefully nothing will screw up being being a virgin in this.

That's a lot of stuff to cover. If your going to do 2 GPU and a CPU you'll need a fair amount of radiator space. The 780T should be able to handle that but the 900D is another option to consider. As for easily installing the second card in the future that's another story. The only way to do this would be a well placed drain port or some quick disconnects. Your more than likely going to have to drain your loop to add another card in the future.

CPU block: EK Supremacy (Not sure which version is for that socket)

GPU Blocks: EK Full Cover Acetal+Nickel or Copper and backplate (Easy to install and sexy. I own a Titan X too)

Rads: Either Alphacool or EK. Depending on your case and radiator support you might be limited, hence the 900d suggestion. I honestly don't know what the 780T supports though.

  Custom Loop

4790K - Titan X - 16GB Vengeance 1866 - Asus Vii Hero - EVGA G2 850w - Samsung Evo 500gb - Corsair 760T - ROG SWIFT
