Which 980 Ti to get?

I'm trying to decide which 980 Ti to get for playing at 1440p:

  • MSI Twin Frozr V / $984
  • Gigabyte G1 Gaming / $970
  • EVGA ACX 2.0+ SC+ / $930
  • EVGA Reference cooler / $880
  • Alternatively an AMD Fury X

Norwegian prices converted to USD.

Been reading all I can find of reviews and benchmarks of the GPUs over the past week, but since I have no experience (due to previously using gaming laptops and hence having limited options with GPUs), I am no closer to an educated decision.

I figure I will overclock it in the future, but have not done so before, hence I will overclock it within a large "margin of safety", i.e. not overclock it excessively (and might therefore not need a crazy cooler). This also means I would appreciate a factory-overclocked card.

The rest of my new build (in case that matters):

CPU: i7 4790k

PSU: CM G750M 750W

MB: Asus Maximus VII Ranger

RAM: Kingston HyperX Savage 16GB 2400 MHz

All responses appreciated!

EVGA ACX 2.0+ SC+ / $930

because of the price. if they were the same price I would recommend g1 gaming.

i wouldn't get the reference cooler as its a blower & u can overclock is as much. The G1 gaming is louder than the EVGA one as it has more fans & the temperatures are relatively the same. I recommend the EVGA one

So far it's 4 to 3 in favour of the G1 Gaming.

My question (because I seriously don't know): what does the G1 Gaming bring to the table that the EVGA ACX 2.0+ doesn't, to justify the $40 price premium?

Is it true about the G1's coil whine?

I heard that there's quite a bit of it.

I don't know, but I'm buying a card within a couple of days, so it would be great to know if the G1 Gaming is worth the price premium over the EVGA ACX 2.0+. Personally I have no clue.

Heyyo,

EVGA ACX 2.0+ without a doubt. Especially for being slightly cheaper than the G1 Gaming.

It's such a damn good cooler and it still has wiggle room for Multi-GPU setups if you chose to do so in the future.

That, and I've never had issues with EVGA cards.

Wait for the Fury X.

I say no. 4GB card? Nah, it'll run into VRAM limitations before it runs into GPU power limitations.

GTA V? Heck, 1920x1080 on a 2GB and I can only play on high with MSAAx4 because I run out of VRAM. 4K is more than double the resolution and GTA V on Ultra is known to use 5GB to 6GB of VRAM.

Star Wars Battlefront.. How much VRAM do you think that game will consume?

I've been using a HD 7970M 2GB the past 3 years, and although being a mobile card, it was very reliable in its performance.

That being said, I get the impression Nvidia's more on top of their game these days, and that's why I'm getting a 980 Ti.

Having used mobile cards for the past decade however, I've got no idea what to look for.

Hence the input from all of you is of great help. The G1 Gaming and EVGA ACX 2.0+ both get 50% of the votes it seems, so the question remains of what the G1 Gaming offers that the EVGA doesn't. If there's a point in paying the price premium, I can do that. I am however not eager to throw money out the window if the difference is merely a gimmick.

It also has a significantly higher power limit on the stock bios which will allow for higher overclocking.

It also depends on how much noise matters to you.  Gigabyte make the loudest card and the 980 cooler version doesn't perform any better than the other cards in the Hexus testing:

Loudest

Gigabyte G1 Gaming

EVGA ACX 2.0

MSI Twin Frozr V

Quietest

Here is a good comparison using the 980 coolers for noise  (non ti cards but the coolers are the same)

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/78157-evga-geforce-gtx-980-classified/?page=9

and one for performance

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/78157-evga-geforce-gtx-980-classified/?page=10

Gigabyte G1 = average to good overclocking / loud card

EVGA ACX 2.0 = average to good overclocking / quiet card / amazing warranty

MSI Twin Frozr V = average to good overclocking / very quiet card / heard bad things about warranty

Basically I am making the same decision as you on which 980ti to get.  After weighing up all my options I have decided to go with the EVGA SC ACX 2.0 card as its almost as quiet as the MSI and the warranty just seals the deal. (I was going to go MSI before I looked at the warranty stuff)

The techpowerup article does show the G1 going above 1500Mhz on the core.  I really hope they review the EVGA ACX 2.0 SC+ for an apples to apples comparison.

Edit 2:

Boom !!!! techpowerup just put up a review of the EVGA ACX 2.0 980ti  .  Hurrah.  Commence the reading......

Edit 3:

Long story short.

Max Overclock

980ti EVGA ACX 2.0 = 1491Mhz

980ti Gigabyte G1 = 1512Mhz

Noise at load

980ti EVGA ACX 2.0 = 35dbA  (quieter than a stock 970)

980ti Gigabyte G1 = 40dbA (same as a 290x or Titan X)

My conclusion : Getting the 980ti EVGA ACX 2.0

I would wait and compare with the new Asus DCUIII version. (so beautiful!!! :o )

Otherwise, I'd probably go with the Gigabyte G1 because apparently it can OC to the moon and slaps the Titan X in the face while doing it. :D
