Looking for a new device

I currently have a WDTV Live Streaming player which works quite well but the one thing that bugs me is how slow the unit is at RW/FF. It RW/FF in 5/6 second increments and pauses every few seconds.

I'm looking for something more powerful where RW/FF will be as smooth as possible. Which component of a HTPC should I make sure to not skrimp on? Is the CPU the most important part for achieving what I want?

I will be playing 1080p files with a bitrate of at least 20mbps.

I would be networking streaming for the device and not using an external hdd.

Thanks.

Make sure that your network is not congested and that your NAS is not busy with other requests.

A CPU/APU that's fast enough and provides high fps hardware acceleration for the video formats that you use should be fine. What player/decoder would you be using, and what file formats do you have?

A lot of players do not offer smooth fast-foward/rewind. DivX Plus Player is an example of one that does so.

thanks for your reply.

When I said i want a device with smooth RW/FF, I meant a hardware player like an Intel NUC or a Chromebox, I didn't mean a media player like Divx Plus, MPC etc.

That's the most important feature i'm looking for. A player capable of playing Blu-Ray sized movies with smooth RW/FF.

I'll probably be using a device with Kodi/Plex as the main streaming option, but woudn't be opposed to a device that plays movies itself without the need for Kodi/Plex software.

It would obviously have to be more powerful than my WDTV.
