Dual Xeon Build! (LGA 1366 + R9 295x2)

Octavialicious

badge-xeon-vert.png.rendition.cq5dam.thu

Hello all! I decided I wanted to do something fun & interesting so I decided to do a dual Xeon Build! I sold my 4790K and Z97X-SOC to afford these parts, but I am very excited to go ahead with this project :)

Parts ordered:

- 2x Xeon X5660s

- Super Micro XD8Ti

- 16 GB Samsung ECC

- XFX R9 295x2

Current Part List:

f11592c23e5502738cf3ca7d081c37a0.png

Purpose:

This build will be used by me for casual CS:GO, LoL, and Minecraft and potentially rendering in the future. As my main usage is gaming, the 4790K would be the smarter choice, but like stated above I want to do something fun! :DI am going to overclock the X5660s to 4.0+ GHz, which will make the gaming performance something near an i7 980. Speaking my games aren't too intense, I should be good to go!  Locked board :(

This build will be very ghetto, as I am putting it in an Air 540. It supports EATX, but not sure if the standoffs are in the right place for the board. I will mod it if need be.

Stay tuned!

Thought I should mention the cooling solution will be a fun experience! The mounting for this board is very picky, so I am using two included heatsinks. I will be slapping on some nice Phanteks fans with zip ties and I will go from there ;)

Looks nice. But are you sure this board supports cross fire? Even if both cores are on the same card, it still technicly cross fire.

Since the borad only has one PCI-E 16x solt, I don't think they have made drivers for this scenario.

Nice, 1366 is such a great bang for buck platform these days and they make fantastic rendering platforms :D

@Stefan1024 has a good point though, also these are triple channel CPUs but if you are using 16GB I assume you are planning to run dual channel (8 doesn't divide into 3 nicely ;)) it'll work fine but you might consider getting a couple of extra sticks just to get the most out of the platform :)

Also just a heads up (you may already know) but you will need to plan for wiring up a second 8-pin EPS connector :) (assuming you intend to use a standard ATX PSU)

My PSU has dual EPS 8 connectors, not to worry :) but yeah, I kinda derped on the ram part

Are you sure? There has been a couple of people who have built Mini-ITX rigs with the R9 295x2, and speaking it's Mini-ITX they only had one PCIe 16x slot, and that PCIe lane is the only lane in general. So by your logic it wouldn't work?

no you see it is different with mini itx. since the board is more server oriented and not really for gaming use (hence the xfire gpu) the motherboard might not support your gpu.

mini itx on the other hand is often meant for gamers and even tho you can't have 2 gpu's on  it you can still have a dual gpu like the r9 295x2 because it is a popular card so manufactors keep that in mind.

super micro was probably not expecting you to put a gpu on that mobo in the first place. :)

edit: have you seen linus server workstation build videos? 2 gpu's wont work on his supermicro board either. even tho it has the lanes for it.

Btw folks, in the case that the R9 295x2 doesn't work, I might sell it and buy a GTX 980 or something along the lines of that :3

Don't worry, it's going to work. If you had 2 R9 290Xs then I might be be a bit concerned, but with the 295x2 the crossfire connection takes place entirely on the graphics card itself, so whether or not your motherboard supports crossfire is irrelevant. The issue Linus had doesn't even apply here because on a hardware level your motherboard will only see that there is one physical card. Its the drivers that tell your computer that there is actually 2 separate GPUs.

12 Core Senpai is done! (for now)

Everything worked without problems! There was a few speedbumps, but the only thing that wasn't compatible was my SSD, which is okay. I will be posting pics tomorrow, and then an overclocking + benchmarking post will come Thurs/Friday. :D Thanks for reading!
