if your spending 15K on a projector, you should spend 600-800 towards a PC to handle content better

it could, but id recommend getting a PC alongside of the android device. just because something can handle it, doesn't mean it will be the best experience.

There is nothing to watch at 4k on it... With HTPC you could atleast use that new blu-ray standard that just came out. http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/ultra-hd-blu-ray-finalized-4k-discs-headed-to-the-home-theater/

future proofing

h265 media will be coming soon

and the scene groups will be moving to that

so if you dl media..that android box...probably won't play the content very well..if at all

your always better off having a htpc....if you really like the android interface..you can install it on a vm on the HTPC

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

just msg me on my profile

If the content you want to play plays on the Shield TV then definitely it's all that's needed, you don't need to spend 'x' hundred on a HTPC at all (I'd go for a tiny NUC like PC anyway) you're not going to notice any benefit, and in a home theatre you want stuff as quiet as possible and a HTPC is always going to be louder than the Shield TV.

Only you know what you are going to be playing and if the Shield TV supports those formats/apps then that's all you need.

That's an excellent projector, as I've seen it perform quite a few times.

I agree with the rest. How much are you looking at spending for your source and your audio equipment?

Sonos is terrible when compared to a conventional receiver and speaker system. Have you considered using a wired set instead? You can always control them wirelessly.

The VPL-VW350ES is still a very good projector. Going down to this model may allow you to spare some cash to build the proper environment (room treatment, finish and furniture), and get a nice screen and audio system.

For larger diagonals, a high gain screen may be desirable (granted that you don't have seats far off-axis).

What would you need the USB DAC for? Are you not streaming the data to your equipment?

What are the dimensions of your room? Is it a dedicated home theater?
