GTA V stutters and crashes

ZombifiedPyro

Hey Guys,

When I play GTA V I get stuttering and inevitably a crash saying "initialization failed, re-install if problem persists." Then it goes to desktop and a get a message saying "display drivers have stopped responding, and recovered successfully." I have also seen this error a lot in hitman: absolution.

I am almost certain it has to do with my lackluster hardware, but which component? I am assuming it is a GPU issue because it is the display drivers, but it could also be my athlon processor. When the game is benchmarked, like in LTTs review the GPU works fine, but when paired with an athlon it has lots of issues. Could it also be a RAM issue?

Thank you.

I get the very same issue, but my display driver doesn't fail. I wish I could help, but at least you know you're not the only one.

His CPU shouldn't have any problems with GTA V. The problem is the GPU.

It's called vram and you don't have enough of it

What are you talking about? An R7 260X has 2GB which isn't a lot but definitely is enough, and that amount VRAM would not cause consistent crashes.

Hmm, well I guess there is some consolation.

What settings are you playing on gta can be quite heavy on vram

I have everything set as low as possible running 720p. The bar at the top says it should take 1GB of the 2GB available

Might be the game itself then. how able are you to try a reinstall?

I could try a reinstall, it will take a night though, not the end of the world. Will steam keep my save file?

Well I don't enjoy playing on controllers at all so IMO its better than PS3. Low settings/720p doesn't look great, but for having a $400 budget PC its alright. Main thing is to get it running smooth and get rid of the stuttering.

rockstar has your online profile and your local save on your computer should keep the rest.

Is windows RAM testing sufficient enough to determine if that is the cause of failures?

Hey guys,

I made some progress talking with R* about why GTA 5 was crashing. They told me my display drivers are out of date (which they aren't anymore, I installed beta 15.5), and that atidxx64.dll was causing my crashing. My question is what is the best way of repairing this file? Completely un install display drivers and re-install?

If I do I clean driver install, how should I go about doing it? Last time I tried to uninstall amd drivers it took my USB drivers with it and I had to use a PS/2 keyboard to get windows to restore. I downloaded DDU but I haven't ran it yet.

Also, they suggested running sfc, which I did. It found corruption, but it could not repair the issues, any clue on how to fix this?
