How to properly wipe SSD?

Zach99

Hello,

I have an SSD that I have been using to store video on for a while now but I want to re-purpose it for use in the HTPC I'll be building soon. It is a Samsung 840 EVO edition drive. I want the drive to be completely wiped (as if I had just opened up the box) so that I can install windows on it for the HTPC. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this properly and don't want to damage the drive in any way.

Any help is appreciated!

There's a special function for SSDs called Secure Erase, and it involves using a bootable image. I'd say DBAN but hard drive wipers don't work correctly on SSDs

Samsung magician should have a function for this

Name comes from anagramed sticker for "TUF Inside" (A sticker that came with my original ASUS motherboard)

There's a trick for USB sticks, but it should work on SSDs too.  Basically it fills any empty space on the drive with zeroes until it is full.

You'll need to boot in Linux (If you don't have it on your PC, make a bootable USB stick with any Linux distro on) and enter a few lines in the command line.
