GTX 970 using all VRAM on little demanding games?

I recently got myself a GTX 970 because it's a great card with cheap offerings and exclusive bundles from NVIDIA. However, when i use it for a simple games like Planetside 2, msi afterburner would tell me that I've used 3506 vram. I know the card only has 3.5gb of vram but on planetside 2 low settings. When i join a match, it automatically just crashes and when i look at msi afderbutner, it's a steady line on 3506gb of vram

My Pc build

CPU: I5 4690K

GPU: ASUS GTX 970 STRIX

RAM: HYPERX 8GB 1600mhz DDR3

Please stop believing people when they say the card has 3.5GB of VRAM. It has 4GB - the last 512MB is crippled, but it is there.

Planetside 2 isn't exactly a "simple" game. Less demanding than the witcher 3 sure but it's not a simple game. 3.5GB of vram sounds high though, probably a problem with the game itself. Got any other games to test with?

I know it has 4gb but only 3.5gb usable. Can you help me with my problem? I have no idea why it's doing that.

It causes stutters, lag and crashes, although, yes it's still there .

OP, what else is running ?

Is just basic windows running at 3,5gb vram ?

It's misleading to say it's only a 3.5GB card.

Looks way too high for PS2, Imo.

Exactly. I saw a video where a guy runs 1440p and max settings yet it works fine for him

I played GMOD and Warface which is extremely low. Both maxes out at 3.5gb and crashes as soon as it loaded

Reinstall your graphics drivers and see how that works. Make sure it's the latest version.

I'll do that but could it also be that I'm on 32 bit?

Not sure why you have 8GB of RAM and a 32-bit OS. 32-bit OSes can only handle 4GB of RAM maximum at a time.

Thank you for not freaking out and accusing one of your part manufacturers to be bad.

Reset your computer and just run Afterburner and the game.

I remember chrome had a vram leak problem , not sure if they fixed that yet.

it's possible, although it shouldn't be directly related to vram. Still, get a 64-bit os, yesterday.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Doesn't seem to work as msi afterburner still show 3506 vram usage for my gtx 970 but the gamme doesn't crash.

Didn't work. Well, sorta. It still shows me that my vram usage for the games is still 3506 but the games doesn't crash this time
