Source 2: http://time.com/money/3896931/volvo-self-parking-accident/

  • demo unit of the Volvo XC60 was used to showcase driver assistance features last week

  • dealer wanted to show off the City Safety system by driving into a group of onlookers, expecting the vehicle to stop on its own

  • Volvo spokesperson says the car’s system is “not meant to be used in this fashion”

  • the men hit in this “dem0000000onstration” were bruised, but not seriously injured

  • original video suggested the car malfunctioned while trying to self-park

  • Volvo says that is not the case - the demo was meant to show the City Safety system, which avoids rear end collisions with other vehicles at low speeds

  • this system does not detect pedestrians - that system is $3,000 extra and is aptly named the “Pedestrian Detection System”

  • Volvo has said that even if the car was equipped with that system, the driver’s foot on the accelerator would have overridden the automated system

  • “I would like to emphasize that Volvo Cars strongly recommends never to perform any tests towards real humans, only dummies or similar objects should be used.”

  • moral of the story is know what tech is inside your device before you try to demo a feature it doesn’t have

Source 1: linustechtips.com - colorful to become worlds second biggest OP: Ahhming

  • Colorful has been clocking an average of 500,000 graphics cards shipped per month.

  • Projected to have shipped over 5 million cards in 2015.

  • Outsold ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and ZOTAC, all of which are multinationals.

US Govt proposes to classify cybersecurity or hacking tools as weapons of war

Source 1: linustechtips.com - us govt proposes to classify cybersecur OP: Faissaloo

Source 2: betanews.com - us govt proposes to classify cybersecurity or hacking

  • Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) which deals with issues involving national security and high technology has proposed tighter export rules for computer security tools

  • This proposal could hinder the work of security researchers.

  • In an attempt to bring cyber security tools under the umbrella of the law, they will be introducing  guidelines on export rules for licensing technology and software as it crosses an international border.

  • Currently, these tools are controlled based on their cryptographic functionality.

  • The new proposed rule could disallow encryption license exceptions.

  • Security researchers need to use tools and scripts that intrude into a protected system.

  • New definition of ‘intrusion software’ refers to a tool which is capable of extraction or/and modification of data or information from a computer or network-enabled device.

  • Tools including hypervisors, debuggers and others that are used for reverse engineering software won’t be considered as “intrusion software”.

  • server still does most of the heavy lifting on shadows, texture mapping, fine-grain details

  • makes a huge difference to the amount of data required to stream a game without impacting how the game plays

  • used it on Doom 3 streamed at 60fps with no discernible difference between streaming with and without Kahawai (obviously an older game, but still cool)

Source 2: kitguru.net - amd clarifies cross license with intel change of contr

  • the companies have agreed not to pursue litigation for any potential patent infringements

  • covers entire patent portfolio for both companies

  • general-purpose processors, graphics adapters, other IPs

  • eg. AMD can design and sell microprocessors compatible with Intel’s x86 instruction set architecture and featuring a variety of extensions

  • Intel could do the same using AMD’s IPs

  • there are a number of terms and limitations, eg. not allowed to build processors compatible with competitors’ infrastructure (sockets, mainboards etc.)

  • if either AMD or Intel change ownership, the agreement is immediately terminated

  • if a transaction happens to acquire either company they will need to negotiate a new cross-licensing agreement if they are to have one in place

  • (the director of corporate communications at AMD was the one making that very clear - not sure if there’s anything to read into there…)

  • speculation that many investors and companies have held off from acquiring AMD since there was not a cross-licensing agreement in place - now that the framework is there it could make an acquisition slightly easier

btw @LinusTech, you were talking about the scrapyard wars at the beginning and saying it takes a week to edit and a day to just watch the whole footage, before even editing it in to a fun video

that got me thinking, would you consider uploading, just the raw footage w/o editing (i mean just taping the clips together in the right time order), to vessel or youtube, maybe on some other channel, not LTT, for those of us that are hard core?

i'd watch you for few days straight, non stop

The thing about that 'cyber warfare/hacking tool' definition is it covers most admin utilities. Are they going to be arresting people for crossing the border with nmap installed on their laptops? How about airmon-ng? How about ping?

I think I now know how the US gun rights activists feel. This totally looks like the government trying to disempower the general populace to make them more vulnerable to government spying and the exploitative practices of tech giants.

While I liked some of the The WAN Show I think Linus going off saying he didn't care what his viewers thought was just another thing that has happened in the past year that's just bad. You really are trying to lose followers eh? Now I also know that my next comment is going to be unpopular but I will say it. In your polls I'm tired of you including things that aren't relevant. It ruins the results. Sometimes you have polls that people actually care about and when you include the option of picking cucumber, lettuce, penis or some other stupid thing it creates throw away votes. Seriously you can be entertaining enough at times to not have polls that produce useless results so please in 2015 at some point can we see proper polls? As for Scrap Yard Wars 2 I like what you are doing with it this time. I look forward to more episodes. I just hope that other things with LMG improve. Also not remembering you reviewed GTX 960s? C'mon man. Oh wait maybe it is because you are so used to using Titan X's as a bench/counterweight for something. Honestly over the last year you have become obnoxious at times like I never thought you could be.  More success is changing you I think and some of it not in a good way.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

UPD. On the topic of classifying hacking tools as weapons of war, this sounds like a really broad definition... "A tool that is capable of extraction and/or modification of data or information from a computer and/or network-enabled device". Look, web browser is a tool, that is capable of extraction of information from a network-enabled device (server). That's stretching it a bit, but you get the point. Any, and I do mean any network analysis tools, like traceroute, for example, that are bundled with OS can be classified as an intrusion software by this definition. That can't be good, right?
