Potential Build (Queries about the case)

Hey Guys I've just been recently looking at choosing components for a build and have got this so far: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/y3zpLk

I'm pretty confident with the CPU,GPU etc. but one thing i'm not certain on is the case, ATM i have chose the fractal design define R4. I was just wondering is there anything else out there you guys would recommend that cost less/no more than the R4 but is of good build quality and not ridiculously garish. i would also like it to be supplied with sufficient cooling as i do not wish to buy extra 120mm fans or such. Any tips on the case or any other components would be greatly appreciated and i thank you in advance for any advice.

(Side note: I am looking to use this PC for gaming and occasional word processing/general work. Also i do not have loads of space so anything around a "medium" case as such would also be appreciated.)

you could get the H440 which comes with three fans in the front of the case however it costs more. the fractal design r4 is a great case i would just stick with that

Did you go with the R4 for the looks or because is silent optimized? The NZXT S340 has excellent looks and a better internal layout and I would also consider the Define S for a similar base layout with the option to go for silence optimization. Other than that the Corsair 350D it's also a solid choice but very widely used (though that doesn't matters much to me it might to you)

The NEX PSU you have chosen is also not a great option, it's made by FSP and isn't one of the better quality units for the price.

Cheaper, more power, better internally.

Thanks so far guys, I will definitely swap out that PSU if it is of better quality.

As for the 350d it looks like a good choice but is more expensive so the R4 seems like a good balance (whyb I went for the case, balance of cost included cooling and not looking like a fisher price disco).

As for going quad core I5 (which when researching before I found to be slightly better performance but slightly more costly) however as Intel's CPUs run cooler I could get away with a cheaper air cooler. My thinking was with the 8350 and a small closed loop radiator I could easily vent the heat from the CPU out the top and leave the front and rear case fans for airflow through the case. Just on a side note would 8GB of higher quality ram serve me better than 16gb of "standard" ram.plus are Intel based MoBos better than AMD ones generally? Thanks again for the advice.

Better CPU
SSD, a requirement on any >£500 build in my opinion, and it's a good one :)
Better PSU (room for SLI)

He did want the PC for general work so the 16gb of RAM might be useful to him.

Good point, however it depends on what the "general work" is, if it involves 8 gazillion chrome tabs then yes I suppose 16GB RAM would be nicer. However, I'd take an SSD over 16GB RAM anyday as it will make everything much more snappy and quick unless the loads of stuff is open at once

As others have suggested, the NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case is a nice case.

A few suggestions:

  • A better cpu cooler. The NH-U12S will do a better and quieter job.
  • Memory with better timings that is nearly the same price.
  • A much better psu.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

16GB RAM, SSD (again, think it's ridiculous to get a PC of this price without one these days), 290X which is only slightly behind at 1080p and faster at 1440p/4K, i5, quality PSU

Once again guys thank for the replies, after much research i have decided a Quad core I5 would suit me better for gaming as games rarely utilize more cores not to mention an intel I5 is probably more future proofed. Will most likely go for an aftermarket air cooler and maybe an additional 120mm fan for the case to maintain positive pressure. I will most likely be getting a SSD as well as a 1TB drive (thanks Aliveghost13 =P) as i hadn't realized they'd come down in price so much (i hadn't looked for quite a long time).
