i7 65w 4790s vs i5 65w 4690s

The i5 is $224.00 while the i7 is $304.00

Would I be able to see a difference between an i7 and an i5 for gaming? Is the price worth the upgrade to the i7? I keep telling myself I don't need the i7 but I may be lying to myself. I use an i5 at work and it's a nice upgrade from the core2duo's we had but haven't had any gaming experience with intel since the p3 days. Right now I'm running a dual core pentium so I need an upgrade, just not sure which way to go.

This would be going in an Asrock m8 mitx case where power consumption and thermal effeciency are major concerns. I went with the 65watt TDP cpu's to try and keep from upgrading my psu and had hopes  it would keep the heat down more than the 84watt chips. If this logic is wrong please feel free to correct me. I'm open to recommendations as well.

Hi, IMHO the i5s would suit your needs pretty well. Since its gonna be an mITX built spend that extra money on some good accessories :)
As for power consumption. Are you trying to make power headroom for the GPU? What PSU are you currently using?
also could you describe how your usage will be like?

The Core i7 processors have more capabilities than Core i5 CPUs, the Core i7 processors for multitasking, multimedia tasks, high-end gaming, and scientific work.

Pretty much. I have a 450w psu, going to upgrade to a 600w unless that new silverstone 700w will fit. I was actually surprised that it can run the titan x, but then again I only have one ssd and a low watt cpu to push.

Usage is gaming in 4k, general internetting as in chrome with 12 or so tabs running youtube, twitch and tinychat maybe multiple instances of these sites. Skype is always running and most of the time I'm in a skype call with video chat or cammed up in a tinychat room. I don't really do any video or photo editing or music creation. I consume media, I don't create it.

Yea, it is 80W TDP but I dont think you will have any problem with it in that M8 case.

That's pretty neat, I'll have to check it out. Using a xeon never crossed my mind.

Good call. :) yeah the xeon has a nice price now. Lucky u folks over there T_T hehe it costs a bomb!

BUT! if you really just  gonna use it the way you described, i think an i5 4590 or 4460. Save yourself atleast 50usd for something else. cus the gaming performace will be very very similar. lower tdp as well. Buy an SSD with that extra money or some cool accessories.
