Android M allows your external storage to setup as an internal storage!

ahhming

Android M allow user to setup their external storage 2 different ways.

The first one is " portable storage"

The second, calling it "Adoptable Storage Devices", which convert the external storage to an internal storage which can store Apps.
Doing so will format and encrypt it

users can actually migrate their "primary shared storage", the /sdcard directory which is the main storage that users see, to any adopted storage device.

Adoptable Storage Devices not only supports microSD cards, but even USB OTG drives.

This feature is available right now in the Android M Preview, though an ADB (android debug bridge) command is needed to activate it. And while this might sound like a relief, users should still exercise the same caution when moving apps and data from internal storage to one that can be more easily removed.

Nice to see, especially since Google cut down SD Card support with KitKat.

If only the S6 had an SD Card slot.

Quad core Pendo Tab 7 with Android 4.4.2, and as soon as an SD card is inserted its recognised as internal storage, while the internal storage is recognised as an SD card.

Edit: just checked, it works with USB's as well.

From what I read on other sources, it seems currently only sd cards can be set up as internal storage, and usb storage devices will be set up as portable storage...

New android versions (at least the ones that are a huge change) always have a name that starts with the next letter in the alphabet.  We're currently at Lollipop, so the next one's name starts with an M

So what happens if you remove the sd card when it's formatted as internal storage? Do your installed apps just disappear from your phone?

Wait, isn't 5.1 still Lollipop? It has been released for a while now...

Probably one of the biggest known gripes with Android has been installing apps to other storage devices. If Android M completely irons out the memory issues that Lollipop has then Android will return to its former glory as recently Android has been kind of beat with all the problems Lollipop brought.

Dark theme ftw.

Yes, 5.1 is Lollipop. Android M is supposedly intended to be 5.2.

Always one of the faults of Android before. Glad to see Google doing this.
