1440p monitor suggestions

Need some help picking a monitor for my new build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/f2DQvKusing an i5-4690k and a G1 Gaming GTX 970.

I think I wanna get a 1440p IPS monitor, but I don't know if the RoG Swift PG278Q is worth the price tag.

Are there some good cheaper alternatives that my build will handle nicely?

Also as a footnote, is it worth grabbing a 4k monitor to run less demanding games in 4k and then just run AAA games in 1440 on it?

My build will be used mainly for gaming and just chilling on.

Any suggestions appreciated  :D

The rog swift is a TN... and is made obsolete by a recently released acer xb270hu (same specs, same price, but IPS)

However a widescreen will be more enjoyable. Alas there isnt a widescreen with 1440p and 144hz, just acer xr341cka and acer z35... and neither are particularly desirable for the overblown price.

Got this monitor for a steal last black friday and I still love looking at it everyday. Just note that the built-in speakers are complete poo and a separate audio solution is a must

Thanks for the suggestion :D

Do you think 144hz makes a massive difference compared to 60hz? I've never used a 144hz monitor

I dont know... i really dont. It might be different for some people than others - even tho i dont think it is.

Personally i have to have a 21:9 with 144hz and gsync available before i pay money for a monitor again.... even if the pixel density is lacking.

But it might be true for the overwhelming majority - that once you try 144hz, theres no going back. 60hz just looks like a lagfest to you.

I have the ROG SWIFT and absolutely love it. By far the best monitor I have ever owned. The color is great for a TN panel and all the other specs\performance is amazing. With all that being said the Acer 1440p 144hz IPS panel wasn't released when I bought it or else I may have gone that route instead. I haven't actually seen one in person so I can't comment on the difference in color. I'd assume it's better...but like I said the SWIFT has great color and I have no complaints with it whatsoever. You really can't go wrong either way with 27 inches of pure 1440p 144hz goodness at your finger tips.

I think it's a case of if you haven't had something before, you don't know what you're missing but the second you use it you just can't go back haha.

I'm thinking of maybe going for a 4k 60hz IPS? That way I can run lower end games in 4k and maybe some other games on high graphics but if stuff starts to stutter I can just put it in 1440p. I've never used 144hz so I've got nothing to miss atm, I've always used 1080p 60hz

Personally, I wouldn't make the jump to 4k yet. At 1440p your 970 will be able to play most everything with maxed settings, and trust me it looks beautiful. However buying a 4k monitor only to lower the graphics settings for your games doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Not to mention that windows scales horribly in 4k and not many programs are optimized for that resolution. 1440p is the sweet spot for right now

After talking to a fee people about this I think you're right. Upscaling doesn't sound like it looks good so there's no point buying a monitor that is just too much for the build :)

I'll give you my personal insight on this as someone who owned a decent G1 970 - it absolutely could not run most AAA games I had at maxed settings 1440p. Maxed. Everything turned on if the option was limited to on or off, and at its highest possible setting otherwise.

For reference the games I tried were GTA V, Skyrim (mods), Titanfall and now The Witcher 3 absolutely crushes it. Frames rates were completely unplayable for me in three of those games - they would fluctuate so much it was eye straining, and it was always well below 60fps.

You will be able to tune down settings to better performance but be under no illusion as to what 'maxed settings' constitutes in AAA games because typically 8xMSAA alone is enough to start crippling fps at 1440p in these titles.

Also of note, even my 980 has issues with these same games - for 1440p you're much better off with a Radeon 295x2 at the price/performance bracket assuming crossfire is functioning properly.

That doesn't mean the 970 isn't a good card, just that it's a high end mid-ranger and people have put a little too much emphasis on the value for money it offers and not enough on the fact that it's not supposed to be the high end option. And that it seems a lot of people don't understand what 'maxed settings' actually are.

If you'd like a different approach, the Dell u2515h is a 1440p IPS with 25", instead of the regular 27. Yay for pixel density. Some people don't like huge screens (like me), so that was an easy choice.

Do you think having full anti aliasing at 1440p is necessary? If you were to tone down the AA do you get decent frames on the 970?

I'd been think about the posibility of going for a 1080p 144hz monitor instead. Do you think 1440p looks a lot better than 1080p? Should I go for a 1440p monitor and then maybe turn a couple of things down, or should I go 1080p 144hz maxed out?
