How to recover data from corrupted hard drive?

StayIced04
Hi everyone, I have a very old Samsung Laptop and recently It started behaving abnormally, I was not letting me access my Folders and stuff in C drive and was asking for Admin permission and when Today I tried to bootup the Laptop, It doesn't boot up.

Laptop had a Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 (Legit)  Antivirus so I don't think it was Virus but OS gone haywire, I then plugged my Laptop's HDD in my PC and scanned for Viruses (I have Kaspersky Pure 3.0 in my PC) and no viruses were found...

I can access all the files I want in my Laptops HDD except for C drive and I have alot of Important Downloads and Docs in my C drive. When I try to access it It says I don't have the permission and I will have to go to security tab to gain access, When I'm done provding my PC the Full control and When I hit apply It says

" The file on this directory is corrupt or unreadable " :/

I have a lot of Important Data on that Drive, Anyone have any Idea how to recover it? I don't think It's physical damage to drive but as I said, Software gone Haywire.

Thanks in Advance :)

You could try running Recuva.  Usually works for recovering files.

I would first try checking it out with a Linux LiveCD (I like Ubuntu because it has a good search feature) to get around Windows permissions that you are having trouble with. This might be enough to get back most of your data, but if not then you should try Recuva as suggested above, or a program called photorec. photorec is all command line driven, but will probably be more successful than Recuva.

While in that Linux LiveCD you could also check out ddrescue and testdisk, both of which are good command line recovery programs.

Failing these you may want to look into UBCD4Win (specifically BartPE and other recovery tools), Hiren's Boot CD and RIP Linux (Recovery Is Possible Linux, conveniently included on Hiren's).

Best of luck :)

Wow, sounds like the drive is failing. Do not run anything like chkdsk because it will probably cause more wear and failure. I would take AnnoyedShelf's suggestion and download and run Recuva and get what I needed before the drive is totally toast.

Did I help you to fix your problem or at least did offer somewhat valuable advice? Consider giving my post a "informative" or "thumbs up".

Thanks everyone above but It seems the problem is now solved. I re-installed the HDD in my Laptop thinking to install a Fresh OS in another Drive so I can boot from Laptop and backup my Important files present in another drive and now Windows is running self diagnostics and now Repairing Disk Error, Let's see how it goes :) I'll keep you guys posted and once again thanks for helping :)

P.S - Recuva didn't helped.

Any idea why this happens in the first place? Or my HDD is dying? This laptop is about 3-4 years old though.

Your HDD may be dying. You can check out the SMART data from the drive if it supports it with CrystalDiskInfo:

Thanks :) I'll check my HDD with it once I get it all booted up :)
