Adblock Plus victorious again in court versus publishers arguing users should not be allowed to block ads and deprive them of revenue

Syntaxvgm

http://www.businessinsider.com/adblock-plus-wins-in-court-versus-rtl-interactive-and-pro-7sat-1-2015-5

Yet again ABP wins in court, though I'm sure the constant legal battlesare not good for the company

Adblock Plus, which claims to be the most popular ad blocking tool, has been victorious again in court versus publishers who took out lawsuits against its owner company Eyeo demanding that users should not be allowed to legally block ads on their sites.

Meanwhile, a ProSiebenSat1 sent Business Insider this statement: "Today is also a sad day for internet users, because AdBlock Plus jeopardizes the financing options for all free internet sites. We still feel it is inadmissible under copyright and antitrust laws, and it is an anti-competitive attack on media diversity and freedom of the press. Therefore, we will review the options for appeal and further legal action against Eyeo.”

You may or may not like adblocking plugins, but-

News flash- I can choose not the render things on MY internet browser on MY computer.

Suck it.

I love add block, but I turn it off for youtube because I love Linus more.

and that's fine. It's YOUR moral decision, and YOU can decide if you want to modify the way content is displayed on your system.

I get the whole free website thing, but maybe if they made ads less obnoxious, we'd be more likely to not block ads.

I think what killed it more than the ad heavy website is youtube. I remember installing ad block when I heard a 15 second ad in the middle of a song. And people HATE ads on youtube. Banners, not so much. Most pop-ups and sound playing ads were limited to news sites and other specidific places. I personally had written greasemonkey scripts to get rid of really bad ones on sites I liked.

Sad truth really, cause there's no way around youtube ads, they are needed to make monetization a thing.

The nice thing about having a YouTube Music Key (the subscription) is that you don't see adds on most music videos. It has other perks too and it's nice to have considering it's bundles free with Google Play Music All Access :)

I'm fine with ads that are just photos of to the side without movement and audio.

I'm hoping people opt for that. But sadly, as people block ads, sites have no choice but to be more aggressive in finding a way to either place more ads or paywalls.

I don't use any ad blocking software and I don't feel bombarded by ads.  I think this victory in court should not have happened.  I do hate commerce but I do think companies/websites on the net have to make money like everyone else in this society and so using software to block ads should not be allowed at this point.

I don't care about the moral objections of anybody adblock exists because marketers went too fucking far way before adblocking was even a thing. They are the ones who basically ruined the internet without ad blocking, they have 0 self control and they basically made ad blocking necessary. I understand the position of websites and content creators but that doesn't means that we should embrace their fucking guilt trips and go back to have the worst, most intrusive form of advertisement ever created.

Personally, I like the way Linus just says his ads in the video. It doesn't bother me, it doesn't take me out of the content, it's far more relevant to me and (I feel weird saying this, because it's an ad) I actually like it.

I love add block, but I turn it off for youtube because I love Linus more.

If you use Firefox, there's an extension to allow you to use ABP and allow specified YouTube channels. It's called: Youtube-Channel Whitelister for Adblock Plus

Honestly it would be a godsend on mobile, some poorly optimized mobile sites take forever to do anything sometimes because the amount of annoying adds on the damn page!

I recently Re-rooted my Nexus 6 just to run Adaway!

Shits cray!

Depending on what mobile browser you use, there are adblock options. I use Firefox on my Android with extensions.

if there was some sort of advertising standards agency for the web then maybe i wouldnt have to use it. eg rules like an ad is not allowed to play sound unless it is before a video or audio content.

It would help if there were some standards. Some go to far and ruin it for others, while some are just overly annoying.

I don't use any ad blocking software and I don't feel bombarded by ads.  I think this victory in court should not have happened.  I do hate commerce but I do think companies/websites on the net have to make money like everyone else in this society and so using software to block ads should not be allowed at this point.

Well, as far as I'm concerned if it's on my machine it is within my rights. As much as telecomms make, they should have to pay a percentage to content creators / providers. No one would pay for internet services if there wasn't content and services to access. I'm not for them trying to make the internet a micro-subscription thing either; like a _ as as Service program. When that happens (no if), piracy will be much more rampant than it is now.

I don't use ad block. Do people pay for it or is it free?

Adblock is completely free. It's available for Firefox and Chrome. Being that I mainly use Firefox, there are a few extra extensions you can put with it to hide objects as well.

Thank god. The things that ads do now are ridiculous. Normal banners on the top or sides or something similar is fine, but the videos that automatically play and replay themselves and the ads that are only supposed to expand when you mouse over them, but do it constantly just aren't acceptable. Sorry, but when ads are less intrusive, I'll unblock them again (I already do on sites that aren't a problem) and if you have ads like that on your site, think about changing them. It doesn't provide visitors with a nice experience and is what drives them to using adblocking software in the first place.

I'm seriously considering rooting my phone just for that. The number of ads that minimize your browser to open the google play store is disgusting. And others that automatically redirect you to other sites or open a site in a new tab are ridiculous as well. The funny thing is, if they didn't make them so intrusive in trying to get me to buy/download their product, I wouldn't even be considering this.

Gloriously free :D

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Do they have tight caps there? Something like NoScript or QuickJava should help with malware; both are for Firefox.

The add-ons or extensions menus in firefox or chrome. Search for adblock plus. Then enjoy a completely different internet! (not really completely different, just less annoying in some cases)

I totally agree. They've went crazy with ads and tracking. I'm sick of the justifications of big data too. I couldn't agree more about those stupid ads that play audio, especially since it is louder than anything else that will play. I have been watching something on YouTube before and had tabs in the background and one of those would start up and just ruin the experience. It would play louder than YouTube and right along with it.

BTW, doesn't rooting also allow you to block ads in apps?
