Testing CPU Stability While Overclocking?

I've never overclocked before and decided it's about time I try. I have a 3770K so I'm fallowing this tutorial.

Simple overclocking is easy enough to understand. What I don't understand is how to test my system stability each time I change something. Linus only says to run Prime 95 for 24-48 hours. I can only amuse he means after you've dialed in your overclock. Otherwise it would take weeks to overclock if you had to do that every time you uped the CPU ratio…

so how do I test for stability after each tweak?

OC high, run P95 until it crashes, lower your clocks. Goes quicker.

i think you're missing the point. i'm not talking about after I've dialed in the overclock. if i change the CPU Ratio from 35 to 40 (for example) how long should i run prime 95 before i can say it's safe to bump up the CPU ratio again. if i had to run it for 12 hours every time it would take weeks to overclock.

Nobody said overclocking took 15 minutes. Take your time with it and let it run for hours.

you're right... nobody said that. including me. but people get good over clocks in a day or two. what you're telling me will take a week.

It's not like it'll crash after six hours, most of the time it'll crash much quicker.

P95 is not the only thing to consider - you'll want to also run real world tests like CPU heavy games such as Battlefield 4 or Far Cry 4.

Depends, sometimes instantly, sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes longer.

@DCWalt.

Yeah, that's a good thing to add.

then can we say running it for an hour in between adjustments is probably reasonable?

I'd still go for a crash. Just go do it. You'll find out how long it takes.
