well I can send text messages when i plug my phone into the computer just comes up as a webpage

Hangouts. (Google) and can be done in browser and on phone.

I use hangout (google talk before they change the name)

but... since steam had all of it (except group chat/video chat)

 

and also it cross-platform with android apps.

so there's that.
