Hi,

980 Ti depending on benchmarks tests but I went with SLI Titan X for 1440p @ 144Hz monitor. Let me know if you need benchmarks. With Shadow of Mordor HD texture pack at 1440p I got 98fps with one Titan X at stock at Ultra settings.  Seems to be a 100fps limit on that game.

Love cats and Linus. Check out linuscattips-fan-club. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Z9QDVn and Asus ROG Swift. I love anime as well. Check out Heaven Society heaven-society. My own personal giveaway thread http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/387856-evga-geforce-gtx-970-giveaway-presented-by-grimneo/.

Currently, 2 high cards my friend, be 2 980s(ti) or 290x(390x)... a 295x as well.

Before anyone comes in tramping saying that 2 high cards is "overkill"... well, it kinda is, but he did ask for "60fps highest settings" to last for 2 years... now, not even the Titan X can't get 60fps on Witcher 3 ultra in 1440p, yep I know the "culprit" is hairworks(turning it off runs smooth 60fps).  But it doesn't matter if the "culprit" in that game is "hairworks", I need to ask, how many games are coming like Witcher 3 in the next 2 years?

The best recommendation hands down is 2 high cards to truly get those 60fps at the highest settings at all time.

I've been thinking of gtx 970 sli - unless I'm mistaken it beats titan x,  but at around 2/3 of the price? http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/82060-evga-gtx-970-ssc-sli-vs-titan-x-r9-295x2/

Who has experience of sli - what are the scaling issues like? I would also consider the r9 295x2, but I use game stream with my shield tab. What do you guys think?

SLI is great when it works perfectly. But MOST of the time you have issues with AAA games at launch. Then if the game does have issues, u either need to wait for a patch or play with 1 970 and at 1440p you are out of luck. I own a titan X and I cant even get a stable 60 fps in The WItcher 3 at max settings.

From experience. If you want to run the highest settings at 1440p, you need more than one card. Look at the benchmarks. The Titan X can run any game maxed out at 60 fps at 1080p, but to get that at 1440p, you will have to lower settings. So go 980's SLI. I have a decent amount of games. Far Cry 4, GTA 5, The Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Far Cry 3. 980's in SLI can get 60 fps (Maxed Out) I'm talking AA and all. Not the false maxed out most people talk about. It will get you there. But  you could also wait for the 980 ti and SLI those.

R9-295x2 or the Titan X if you are doing editing and gaming. You could also use two R9-290x 8GB in CF or two GTX 980s in SLI.
