Building Family Home PC

Go to solution Solved by brob,

I would not plan on upgrading a cpu. In a few years the tech will have moved well beyond what would be available for the motherboard. And would likely be less expensive.

An i3 would be better than the Pentium and 4GB should be enough memory, especially if the system has an ssd. Asus lists the hdd in the G74SX as SATA, so it could be reused in this build.

The motherboard needs BIOS 2301 to work with the cpu. Check with the merchant before buying.

Hi, my family needs a new computer because the old one is simply to slow and takes forever to turn on. I have built three gaming computers earlier, including my own (i7-4790k, gtx 780, 16gb RAM,) and two of my friends' computers. I'm used to hight to mid range gaming computers and don't really know anything about "family" computer-parts. My budget is 5000 NOK (Norwegian kroner), around 650 USD, including 1x 1080p monitor. The System is mostly going to be used for web browsing, office and light gaming like minecraft. I've already found some parts, and i want to know if they work well together or if there is any parts i should switch out.

  • Intel Pentium G3258 3,2 GHz   Going to overclock this one
  • MSI B85M-E45
  • Crucial Ballistix Sports DDR3 1600MHz 8GB
  • Kingston SSDNow V300 SV300S37A 120 GB
  • Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD
  • Fractal Design Core 1100 (Black)
  • Corsair CX 430M 430W
  • Samsung S24d390HL 1080p display

I already have a Windows 8.1 key and other peripherald like mouse, keyboard and an optical drive. I'm also wondering if it's possible to take out a HDD from a Asus G74SX (the old computer they use, this is also my old computer before i built my own) and use it in the new setup instead of bying the seagate 1TB HDD. I'm thinking about this, since my family don't save alot of files on the computer, but on an external HDD.

One last thing: is the Intel HD graphics enough for the 1080p display, or do i need to rethink the build and add a GPU?

Thanks in advance!

Get a Samsung Evo SSD. That's about it honestly.. The g3258 will be fine especially if overclocking. That's still a gaming Cpu in my mind. I would also get a EVGA or seasonic PSU but that's a nice one. What other games will it be using to play on? If nothing much more then like minecraft the hd graphics will be good or a nice cheap 750ti anywhere from like a r9 270 or 270x would also work.

well, i guess it kinda never will be used much for gaming, since all of my siblings have their own computers

alright stick with the hd graphics. If you ever need to upgrade I looked up some benchmarks the r9 270 Is a bit better then the 750ti with the price difference very slim. I think the 270x is only around $20 more but the 270 will be more then enough, so would a 750ti.

will the Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H be good enough? Not sure what 8x series chips means. I have also been thinking about a new build, with i3 4610, but then i have to switch out the 8GB RAM to 4 GB and just one 120 GB SSD. What would you recommend? Go with the i3 4610 4GB RAM and 120 SSD, or the Pentium G3258 with 8GB RAM and 250 SSD? What would give me the best longlasting performance?

Also, if i should go with the pentium, can i use whatever motherboard to overclock, or do i need some special type?

Thanks!

yea that board is good

also I think you ment 4160

the pentium with the 250gb and 8gb ram is the better option

you can easily throw in a new cpu in a year or 2

FYI, the S24d390HL stand is kinda crap, the monitor shakes alot whenever you touch the desk you put on. otherwise, no complaints
