cheap Kodi/Steam Machine?

Go to solution Solved by ObilvionNizer,

You could get a Gigabyte Brix and add the Memory and storage to it

http://amzn.com/w/3MKGECEKKI1Q6

The Brix, Memory and HDD comes to $169.72 but if you want to decrease the storage from a 120GB to less you could maybe get it below $150.

Hi, i recently decided to buy a Raspberry Pi and install Kodi on it, so i can carry it and a small hard drive around with me for watching movies with friends when i'm with friends in croatia and don't have internet. The advantage here would be that i could connect it to old tvs with composite video but also new tvs/monitors with hdmi.

Then i realised Steam doesn't work on ARM, but i kinda would like to have a portable steam machine so i can play arcade games with my friens, i am primarily thinking about towerfall: ascension here.

So now i would like to build/buy a NUC-sized barebones pc that can run kodi and steam and connect to composite video and i'd like to stay below 150$. I'm not even sure if that is possible or if i should do it, but if anyone has any ideas or recommendations that would be great and help me alot.

Thanks

unfortunately i live in austria where the price of this brix has gone up in price and would cost me more than $150, but thank you for your effort

No problem. But building a mITX system could cost more than the price of the brix. If a NUC is cheaper go for it

its goint to be alot pricier but i can get way more than twice the performance from less than double the price of the brix.

If its just to want it to be a kodi machine theres no point spending more than the price of a brix.

The raspberry pi is not that good for using kodi. He is best using a PC. The Pi is to slow and takes a while to load the basic files and is limited to the add-ons that can be installed.

You can run Steam via a Linux x86 emulator.

There is an open source solution, but it doesn't perform as well.

Motherboard: MSI A88XI AC V2 Mini ITX FM2+ (€99,87)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB DDR3-2133 (a friend gave me this)

graphics performance should be better with this setup i think

wow i did not think of that at all, but i don't think that the performance will not be enough even for 2D-games on the RPi2... :/

as i already stated, i live in austria. Everything you listed will cost me at least 5% more where i live, that is at LEAST. Austria is not Germany so Caseking Home of Hardware and Amazon DE won't get me anywhere. a µATX is not an option for me as that will be huge and i want that thing to be as portable as possible. 7liters case size is my absolute max. Therefore i need to get a SFX psu, those can be pretty pricy even at 300W. I already have storage and i even plan on using my 850 evo from my main rig if i go on holiday with friends.

Thank you for your help man, but i thing i am going to wait until after the summer with this thing. I'll see how things play out, maybe prices drop, maybe something new and interesting gets released. I'll probably come back to this post then but for now i'm good. Steam summer sale starts in 75 minutes anyway so i need to find my wallet, it's been hiding somewhere since it realised that the sale begins today...
