Speakers in College Apartment

pdubs

Hi,

I would like to upgrade my speakers from the built in monitor speakers.

The problem is that I am a college student in an apartment and do not want to get in trouble with them or bother those around me.

I have heard that a subwoofer can cause vibrations/noise that can bother other people and I would like to avoid that.

If I got something like the Razer Leviathan sound bar/subwoofer system, would that be a problem or is that more a problem with things like full surround sound systems? What if I did not use the subwoofer/turned bass way down?

I would like to have bass, but I also do not want to worry about bothering the building when using my speakers.

Also, any recommendations for speakers/soundbars? Preferably in the $100 to $200 range

Thank you

subwoofers are generally a problem if you want to keep noise down.  The one I have under one of my rigs in the house pretty much shakes the entire upper floor, and you can hear it from anywhere.

I have headphones right now, but I want speakers also.

Would just turning the bass down when it might bother people help?

When I am using it at home, I am not worried about bothering others as much, so I would use a subwoofer there.

See above, no sub and nearfield. That means that the spears and your head are set up as the corners of an equilateral triangle. That way you get good sound but at a low enough volume so as to not disturb people. If it were me, I'd just use headphones.

Buy Klipsch promedia 2.1 and call it a day.

You can turn the subwoofer down to a tolerable level. You shouldn't bother your neighbors too much. Just don't play them loud at night.

Use the EQ on your computer to take out the bass frequencies for night time and early morning listening. You'll be fine.

You can't beat the promedia 2.1 in the sub $200 range for computer speakers. It's been that way for over 10 years.

You won't be disappointed. You will likely find these speakers for $150 US or less.

Intel Inside. Overweight guy in his 30's outside.

I'd recommend the Micca PB42x (powered or unpowered). My suitemate has them and they sound absolutely amazing. IMO best speakers for sub-100.
If you have a larger space, go with the fluance SX6. Those things sound fantastic.

What I dislike about those is their garbage knobs.  The potentiometers they used are turds.  After a year or so of flux build up, you'll hear crackling every time you turn the knob.  Not to mention the lack of a heat sink often burns out the amplifier.  Other than that they're great speakers.

Buy yourself a nice pair of bookshelf speakers and a receiver.  This will allow you to experiment with placing them and get the best sound to your taste.
