Please Help Me Choose

Go to solution Solved by Sam Z Man,

alright thanks man :) i just hope that i can airflow my case enough to not roast my dorm room lol

It has a switch that can make it be fast or quiet, so that can help.

My Computer:
Cpu: AMD Fx-8350 (4.2GHz) (can overclock farther if suggested, i have it on water)
Gpu: MSI R9 270x
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA
Ram: G-Skill 16 GB
Monitor: 2x Acer 21.5" Widescreen LCD

So i currently am helping a buddy build his very own gaming PC, and i will be selling him my 270x.  He only plans to play games like League and some low demand games.  So I am going to use this money to purchase a GTX 970, but i posted this thread a few days ago and many said i will bottleneck that card and waste my money, so after more browsing i have come up with the possibility of getting an r9 290.  I just wanted to correctly label the thread and re-open discussion.  Should i stay with a 970, if so which one? Or pick up the 290?

I've only heard good things about this card:

http://pcpartpicker....card-100362vxsr

Or maybe this one?

http://pcpartpicker....o-card-1003623l

maybe any other suggestions you have?

The 290 is a tiny bit more powerful (And definitely is better when using more than 3.5GB of vRAM), and will be an easier switch from the 270x (same drivers)

The 970 is newer, with better optimized games/drivers

It doesnt really matter, just pick your poison

I dunno why they said a bottleneck, an 83x0 will be just fine to run it. OC if you chose, you wont tell a difference.

Go for the 970. There's not much difference. If you were to go with the r9 290, go with the Tri-X one (yellow) as it gives much better performance than the blue ones

If you want my attention, quote my post or I will not see it. I ignore builds that do not use PCPartPicker.

I feel like GTX 970 is a better option, as Nvidia tend to update their drivers specifically for game titles. Plus, the power of those cards isnt really enough to go over 3 GB of VRAM, unless you go SLi

The Vapor-X has an extra 0.03 GHz, besides that they're basically the same.

Oh, and improbablepants, I don't think OP asked about 970s.

If you play alot of games that uses OpenGL then go Nvidia, if not then go AMD there is no reason not to unless the price of 970 is very cheap. =)

So is the cheaper 290 gonna hurt me in the long run? i know the card is getting to the older side but it still holds up well considering its age. Do you think it has much time left in it?

So you're choosing between a 50 year old woman who has held up well over the years vs. a 21 year old college chick that is perky on everything that protrudes from her body.  Hmmm...

It competes with the 970 really well for being older.

i totally agree with this, but does that mean that it is a good investment, or should i fork up the extra cash and get the 970? because i just dont wanna invest in the less expensive card to then have to upgrade again in 2 years just because i was running on an older card. Know what i mean?

They will get outdated just as fast where you go with AMD out Nivida.

Yes sapphire makes the best amd cards but right now you can get there 290X Tr-X for 300$ after a mail in rebate, you might want to consider that.

i looked on gpuboss.com and i saw minimal fps increase in like bioshock, but it got much better scores, do certain games react a lot more? or is it just a little bit better

The 290X because it's cheaper and performs the same on average also the extra 0.5Gb of vram is a nice thing to have.
