Well a G3258 is technically a downgrade in some ways, and an FX6300 is a dead end. Why not an i3? Or a locked i5 4460?

Regardless you'll need a new motherboard (LGA1150 for Pentium or i3/i5, AM3+ for FX) and likely DDR3 RAM since most Q6600 boards were DDR2.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Some socket 775 boards ran on DDR3.

HP Envy X360 15: Intel Core i5 8250U @ 1.6GHz 4C:8T / 8GB DDR4 / Intel UHD620 + Nvidia GeForce MX150 4GB / Intel 120GB SSD / Win10 Pro x64

I'm aware of that, but the most common ones were DDR2 at that point and he didn't post his exact specs.

An i3 would be your best bet. In games like gta v the 6300 would be a bit better (than an i3) however in other games there wouldn't be that much difference between an overclocked q6600 and an fx 6300 as the single threaded performance is rather similar. An i3 is much more balanced, gets better frames in most other titles, draws less power and has a much better upgrade path. I3 is the way to go.

a core i3 is still much better than an overclocked pentium...and in most situations better than an overclocked AMD FX as well when it comes to gaming...it should be your CPU of choice IF you can't afford say an i5-44XX which would be another step above those.

Save for an i5, not worth the upgrade to G3258, maybe i3, but not G3258 (games will even run worse because only 2c/2t)

AMD 860K @ 4.3GHz ; Kingston HyperX Fury 2400MHz ; Asus A88XM-Plus ; Sapphire R9 270X 2GB ; 600W Tacens Radix VII AG 80+Silver  ; Cooler Master TX3 Evo
