2gb vs 4gb @1080p Gaming

I am planning to buy a gtx 960 an asus strix to be specific now the problem is i can't choose whether to get a 2gb or a 4gb of vram.  There is a 40$ difference and to say that i do not plan to do overclocking, 4k reso display or even sli in the near future. I am afraid that i might get an overpriced card. What i really want is a card that has low power consumption and can run games at med-high/ultra settings like Watch dogs, GTA V, Shadow of Mordor, NBA 2k15 and etc. at 1080p gaming (single monitor).

Don't get A 960. Depending on prices In your area get a 280x or 290. 280x beats out the 960 and has 3gb of Vram. The 290 beats both cards and has 4GB. But that gets beat by 970 which has 3.5gb

with the strix I can play games like csgo payday 2 and stuff maxed out without the fans spinning up

A 2 GB card is still fine for 1080p. But if you're going to go for more, I think the 4 GB 960 is uncomfortably close in price to faster cards like the R9 290.

2GB is no longer enough as of GTA V. My GTX 680 2GB EVGA Superclocked Two-Way SLI setup? I run out of VRAM before I max out my GPU useage. I'll sit at 50% load on each GPU with my VRAM at 2010 MB sigh... I run 1920x1080, 2x MSAA with TXAA and most of my settings on High with a few like shadows and post processing on normal.

I'd go with the 960 2gb. 4gb version is quite pointless since the gpu doesn't have enough raw performance to keep up with such amount of vram, and that tiny bus will be a bottleneck when pushing +3gb.

 

Also, people have been able to run High textures in Shadow of Mordor in a 2gb vram gpu without problems. And in GTA V, real vram usage is quite lower than what you see in the settings, 2gb can manage up to 2.8gb of vram showed in settings.

 

Going to a 280x or 290 are also good options, but they consume a lot more than the 960.

i'd like to note, if your playing gta 5, please do plan for atleast 4gb of vram, as i maz out my vram on my 780 before i max out usage

on my 970 I hit 3.2-3.3 gb of usage almost maxed out without advanced options and that'd only 1080p

If you already have a gaming PC (a reasonable assumption for this forum) just throw a Pentium in it and stream. I don't see the point in high performance HTPCs any more.

Even a htpc only makes sense over a NUC if you're doing it because you like building things (reasonable) or if you plan to expand later with things like TV cards and dvr functionality, or add optical media support.

2GB is fine if you're willing to drop textures from Ultra to High if you get stuttering.

R9 290... make sure you have a beefy power supply and you don't live in a place where it hits 90 degrees.  If so, you're screwed.

 

1080p gaming, gtx 960 is an awesome choice.

280X is $60 more and won't run unless you have a minimum 500 watt power supply.
