Upgrading my DSLR, options?

I'm looking to upgrade my Sony A77. I want great pictures and 4K video (imagine a mix of the 1DX and Ursa). Maybe the Sony A7S but I could wait for the A7S II which hopefully adds internal 4K recording. I can get an Atomos Shogun but it'll make the system very bulky, especially with a screen shader. The Ursa Mini looks quite nice but no stills.

By your specifications your only choice are the Samsung NX1, Panasonic GH4, or Canon 1DC. BUT ask yourself if you really need it all.

But ask yourself what you're going to be shooting. 4k is just a buzz word right now, 1080p is still the standard and will be fore a few more years.

What's the ratio for photo/video?

I would also like the option of colour grading my video in Resolve. It would be nice to upgrade to a full frame sensor too.

The NX1 looks a good option but does not have full-frame and not as good as the A7S in low light. I'll be shotting some low light stuff this year on my holiday (a starry sky on a remote island).

Nothing is as good in low light as the A7s, so there is no contest there

Honestly you really need to weigh up pros and cons, for example, you said the shogun will make it bulky.. but then said you considered the URSA which is even more bulky - plus how useful the Shogun is for filming

4k is still unnecessary most of the time, and i would take an amazing 1080p image over a medicore 4k one, like go watch footage from a C100 and tell me it looks bad - its only a 1080p camera

I believe the 1DX does not have focus peaking and zebras? The NX1 looks like a good balance but not sure if the photo quality will improve over my A77.

The upcoming Canon XC10 looks interesting, but quite a few people have complained about the small sensor and lack of swapable lens.

What is your budget for a start, and what are you looking for.. the XC10, NX1 and 1DX are so insanely different

A camera that takes better photos and video then my A77. I dont really have a budget, if I like something I'll save up for it.

XC10 looks like a great 4K camcorder but it remains to be seen what the small sensor is like. It takes photos too.

NX1 looks like a great 4K and photo camera but not full frame. Has 2 great native lenses.

1DX is proabaly the best photo camera but the video functions are lacking.

A7S takes great photos and 1080 video but no internal 4K. Lack of decent native lenses. maybe wait for an A7S 2?

GH4 I guess takes good photos and has internal 4K.

I think you should go for the black magic line of cameras, since they have amazing dynamic range so you can achieve amazing results when in resolve. But since you mentioned that you are not interested in the ursa mini, I would say for an affordable option you should go for the GH4, im not sure how the sony a7 series handles High dynamic range or if raw video can be achieved, but certainly they perform incredibly in low light.

That being said, if you do plan on using resolve also consider a colour accurate monitor if you do not have one already :)

The world's best video cameras (Arri Alexa, RED Dragon, etc) all use Super 35 sensors (similar in size to APS-C). And also nothing is as good as the A7S in low-light. Great films usually counter this with smart lighting in the first place.

After looking at a few reviews, I'm leaning towards the NX1.

  • Samsung NX1 with 16-50mm f2-2.8 Lens Vertical Grip and Battery
  • 2x SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro 95MB/Sec
  • Samsung 50-150mm f2.8 S ED OIS Lens
  • Samsung ED-SEF580A External Flash
  • Hoya 72mm Pro1 Digital Circular Polariser
  • Rode Stereo VideoMic X
  • Rode DeadKitten
  • Tascam DR-60D Mark II
  • Manfrotto MVM500A monopod + head

SNIP

List looks good, I suggest trying one out before taking the plunge, maybe rent one for a weekend or something

Looking around online, unfortunately most retailers in the UK do not thave the NX1 bundle in stock, with no firm dates as to when Samsung will ship.

The bundle maybe not, but plenty of places have the camera in stock

yeah but I think the bundle will save me a few £100 though, even though the separate pieces are in stock.

I guess so

my main issue with the NX1 is the proprietary mount and lack of lenses and only APSC, its video is good though

I ordered a Samsung NX1 on Monday and I'm pretty pumped to try it out. I have an NX300 and absolutely loved it so I'm pretty confident that I'll like the NX1 too.
