GPU BIOS flashing failure rate?

blu4
Go to solution Solved by Briggsy,

I must have flashed my old 7950 with a dozen incompatible bios files. the easy solution was to reboot and switch to iGPU, flash the card again from within windows with the original bios, and than reboot and switch back to pci-e graphics. Never succeeded in bricking the card, but apparently it's doable.

Hey,

I am planning to purchase the 980ti when it comes out but since it won't have a BIOS switch (at least the reference one) I am a little bit concerned about bricking a $600+ GPU. I hope other vendors like EVGA will do one with dual BIOS so that I am worry free but for now I am concerned. Anyway, to my question- what is the failure rate of flashing the GPU with all the correct files and procedures? I did see Jayz video when he mentioned bricking his 780- I'd like to avoid that.

Jay bricked it, because he overlooked and flashed wrong BIOS if I recall correctly. :)

The chance of bricking it is the same rate of bricking your Mobo bios...

Once you use a compatible BIOS, the correct tools and method failure rate should be low to non-existent, just make sure to flash back to stock to do driver updates or otherwise you can ruin your GPU.

What... Why bother with dual bios switches then? All I can think of is recovery speed.

Yeah, I guess it's peace of mind if the first bios actually got bricked beyond recovery.

My guess would be different architectures/cards can behave differently to BIOS flashing. Or just sheer dumb luck. :D
