First Mechanical Keyboard

Warren Pnigel

Hi LTT,

I'm looking to buy a mechanical keyboard (which will be my first) and I am thinking of going with Cherry MX Browns. I'll be typing and gaming, so I'm thinking that browns will be a good balance.

I'm also looking for something with back lighting (preferably multicolour/rgb or white). I'm also edging towards 10 keyless due to the compact nature of the keyboard.

Anything under 150 usd, with all the features I suggested. Also please do not suggest anything that has this font on the keycaps (I'd prefer to keep the stock keycaps): http://www.custompcreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/cm-storm-quickfire-tk-custom-pc-review-16.jpg

Thanks for your help guys!

He needs 10 keyless, so maybe k65 if thats 149

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

Ducky Shine 3/4 TKL might be your best bet for fancy lighting. No RGB (yet) but dual color is available with Shine 4 (red and blue).

Okay, I've decided I can give the backlighting a miss. http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Mechanical-Keyboard-CH-9000040-NA/dp/B00DOWCQ0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432630700&sr=8-1&keywords=corsair+k65+cherry+mx+brown

Do you guys know of anything like this in mx browns?

A Filco Majestouch TKL, if you're wanting no numberpad. It's a great and solid built keyboard and I recommend Filco to anyone. Just remember, you're paying a premium for a Filco product. They're £114 here, so I am not sure how much they are in dollars.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

"Well that's what I always said I wanted to be remembered for, for being honest. Nothing else is worth a damn"

Unfortunately, the K65s only come in Cherry red switches as far as I can tell from the official corsair website. As a K70 owne, they are fantastic boards with nice build quality and a comfy wrist rest and keyboard feet for both the back AND the front of the board if you want a little customisation.

There is also a Logitech mechanical switch (Model: G710+) using brown switches with o-ring dampeners, white backlighting and dedicated G keys for gaming and applications. Linky Here  (I envy you yanks sometimes with your cheap keyboards :(

Lol don't be envious I'm in Australia so that means I get to pay more for everything for almost no reason at all. I just said usd cause it's sort of a standard with prices when it comes to pcs :D

There are a ton of great keyboards that come at under 150 on Massdrop.com

I would check it out there, but you may have to wait a little bit to receive the product.

Like this Ducky Shine 4 limited edition

This has MX Clears though. Is there much of a difference between these and browns?

Clears are nice. They're like browns but with a slightly heavier actuation force. I'd suggest a ducky, Vortex, Wasd, or Filco. They all make a tkl version. Ducky boards you can't beat for the price and you can get about any switch (including brown). Vortex are another on the cheaper side but built well, most of these are printed PBT keycaps though and most don't have back lighting, or many back lighting options.  Wasd and Filco are a bit higher priced, almost to the point of paying for the name in my personal opinion, But the build on them is top notch.

The KUL ES-87 is a solid choice for an entry-level mechanical keyboard. It's a simple ten keyless with no backlighting but has dip-switches, a detachable cable, and standard ABS keycaps with a clean font on them. The thing is I don't know how much it'll cost to ship to Australia from mechanicalkeyboards.com and it already costs around 129.99 USD so it might go over your budget when shipping costs are added.
