MSI GTX 970 vs MSI R9 290

DrMacintosh

Hello, I'm currently building a PC and I'm looking for a graphics card. Ive been stuck between choosing either the R9 290 or the GTX 970. They seem like very close competitors but the 290 costs way less. Can anyone offer reasons why I should consider one or the other?

if you can afford the GTX970

just grab the 290X

the 290X has more cores in the GPU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

GTX 970 will give you PhysX.  So if you want that then go Nvidia.  I personally won't tell you to buy this card new though as I don't believe in giving Green Team money for this card they lied about and refused to admit to telling lies about and covering it up with bs excuses.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

To be clear, we're talking about the R9 290, and not the 290x, correct? The 970 is faster than the 290, but is matched / slightly nudged out by the 290x. However, with game releases, features, and so forth on NVIDIA< I'd reckon it's almost worth the premium tag. MFAA works amazingly well, ShadowPlay is great, and GeForce Experience makes it easy to update your drivers, and manage your games / optimize them from the community (if you're into that sort of thing.)

Personally, I couldn't be happier with my 970. My older brother has the 290x, and often complains about how loud it is, how hot it makes his room, and so forth. We both play at 1080p, so there's no performance difference.
