How many VMs, what are the VMs doing? You may want a CPU with more cores in which case X99 may be better for you.

Laptop: Thinkpad W520 i7 2720QM 24GB RAM 1920x1080 2x SSDs Main Rig: 4790k 12GB Hyperx Beast Zotac 980ti AMP! Fractal Define S (window) RM850 Noctua NH-D15 EVGA Z97 FTW with 3 1080P 144hz monitors from Asus Secondary: i5 6600K, R9 390 STRIX, 16GB DDR4, Acer Predator 144Hz 1440P

18 VM (3 windows servers 2003/2008/2012 and 15 clients win 8.1/7/xp) i will be troubleshooting configuring connectivity file sharing and installing and upgrading some video calls between them

I recommend X99. Sure, It won't do as well as the other chip in gaming, but it does VERY WELL in a multi threaded workload. I'm bonded to my 5820K, but the 5960X is a bit better with all dem cores. I don't ever recommend the 5930K unless you have more than 3 graphics cards.

Also for the GPU, I get ultra 1080 60fps on a single 980 without my CPU or GPU overclocked. (5820K) While I personally think the 980Ti is really meant for 4K, (Seeing as rumors say its just a cut down version of the titan X) I don't recommend it for 1080. Sure its nice to have it, but kinda overkill IMO. The dual 970 is not a bad option either.

You need a zeon. 8 cores and 32GB of RAM

As long as the xeon is 2.9ghz or more u will have no problem for gaming.

For 3 VMs each will need 2 threads (or 1 core) so you wont be able to game at the same time as running the VMs as only 1 core or 2 threads will be left over.
