I want to rent out my server.

Any ideas?

 

I can host minecraft for 10-15 people and have a web server i have 150/10mbps internet connection.

 

I just want like 5$ a month for each service, any idea how i can market it?

Im going to give you some advice, Just dont... its work and you need to know exactly what you are doing, 10mb upload is not enough.

I see you also list youself as a Linux and Networking expert? forgive my ignorance but at 15 years old that would be quite amazing.

I know exactly what im doing i am using red hat enterprise linux with a web gui accessible from anywhere to change settings for the Apache server and mc server.

I have set up servers for many people at offices but i was thinking of doing it myself.

10mb is plenty for minecraft ive had a MC server since i was 13 and have had 7+ friends on it with no lag.

EDIT: I also have an pc that im using as a router and firewall and dhcp server i set up myself with ip tables and a script.

What are the specs?

Pentium G3258, soon it will get an i5 4670K

8GB of RAM.

Sorry to burst your bubble mate but setting up a windows server with NAT and DHCP really isn't hard at all, and the firewall is built in natively. 

Or if you were to use a GNU+Linux environment, there's "point and click" distros also that can do it all for you. Or if you just used apt-get (depends on distro again) and installed the services.

 

One would not host from their own personal home connection. If you were serious about hosting you would be doing it through a cloud company.

Your parents most certainly would not approve of you allowing random people who give you $5 a month access to your internal network, or at the very least a pathway to easily access your internal network.

To tell you the truth you may know what you are doing but no one will pay money to rent a server with those specs when there are better servers that are cheap with way better specs and guarantee up time

Sorry to burst your bubble mate but setting up a windows server with NAT and DHCP really isn't hard at all, and the firewall is built in natively.

Or if you were to use a GNU+Linux environment, there's "point and click" distros also that can do it all for you. Or if you just used apt-get (depends on distro again) and installed the services.

One would not host from their own personal home connection. If you were serious about hosting you would be doing it through a cloud company.

Your parents most certainly would not approve of you allowing random people who give you $5 a month access to your internal network, or at the very least a pathway to easily access your internal network.

No. I am 17 and I know this is not expert-level.

I have set up and managed a Bukkit server for six months now, alongside ngIRCd and Apache with PHP and MySQL. I compiled all of those myself, plus set up Python 2 and 3 together on my box. The only tools I've ever used are PuTTY/OpenSSH and WinSCP/FileZilla. My server has a W3000-series Xeon, 32GiB of RAM, and a symmetric 250Mbps link. It runs CentOS. Why do you use RHEL, out of curiosity?

Unless there's someone else just as good that I don't know of, you should be renting from OVH or Online.net. Is yours a VPS, or dedicated? From whom? A lot of small sites simply resell boxes from those two websites, FYI. As asked above, what are your box's specs? Is the server's uplink seriously 10M? You're not going to get anyone wanting to rent with that. Fibre is the new standard for the major league.

Do you backup your servers in multiple locations? both onsite and offsite in a secure environment?

you may have a 1200w UPS but what's the battery in it like? is it good enough to last a sufficient amount of time or at the very ;east enough to do a full system backup?

There is always risk of internal network security, no matter what "config" you might have. 

Are the WD red drives setup in any RAID configurations for even better redundancy or are you just doing backups on singular drives?

 

These are all things you need to factor in considering you can hire a server that has all of these features and also the feature to remotely access and self-manage instead of using you as the middleman to apply any server changes/etc.

Just CLI i back up to internally on the machine and externally to a seperate server onsite, the UPS is brand new. I have 2x2TB WD red in raid 0 and a seperate 4TB single incase the raid fails. The ups lasts enough time to backup all the files. No middleman nessesary it is remotly acessible from any web browser with seperate accounts for each user each with different permissions. I may not have a large set up but it is reliable and user friendly to people who are using it. I was more interested in just having a minecraft server on it for a customer or 2 as i will be getting fiber soon.

Why setup in raid 0? thats the complete opposite of redundancy, it destroys the purpose of getting red drives. Raid 1 would be the better suited option with all 3 drives.

If it's a remotely accessible server (even just by a web GUI) there's risk of internal network breaching, and what's to stop people from DDoSing the server? You havn't stated that you have any traffic management like cloudfare at the very least.

Im setting up an ssl cerificate but i was having problems with chrome freaking out cause i didnt have one so soon yes it will be on port 443 with https. also login with the username "root" does not exist and after 10 failed password attempts ip is banned for 1 hour then 12 hours if 10 more failed attempts.

I'm no expert, not by any means, but wouldn't HTTPS (port 443) be a little more wise...? For being an "expert," I'm starting to heavily doubt your "expertise."

The expertise is there just not all of it has been put into effect yet :P

Okay.. so what I'm seeing is that you have the most basic sense of security? You do know that SSL certificates are nothing but a trust system, right? You can create your own SSL certificate, and Chrome will still freak out because it is not a "trusted" certificate. Plus, you can easily override the SSL warning. HTTPS is better than HTTP even without an SSL certificate.

The expertise is there just not all of it has been put into effect yet :P

Yes i am aware. My network is not set up yet completely, i have 443 forwarded and ready to go but not everything has been set up. Currently there is only backups of my gaming pc and security footage on the server so having https was not necessary yet.

Its not an ego its fact, i have the knowledge i read all day about networking and security, i just dont have everything in effect on my system. I want to go to university for networking engineering or something along that line. I am 15 and have set up a server with only CLI, i am learning C++, i know html, i can program and operate a CNC machine, imagine when im 20 or 25 and have been to university.

Don't do it guy, it's great that you're learning and everything. Definitely way ahead of where I was at 23, let alone 15. If you want to run a MC server for your and your friends, go for it, but people shouldn't be paying you for your experiments and learning experiences.

 

It's also a lot of work for $5 / month, the extra electrical juice alone might cost that much. Anyway, you'll spend a few hours configuring it initially and a few hours of work a month on it (servers are always more work then you think, nothing is ever set and forget anymore ;) ) so that means you think your time is less worth then $5 / hour? Anyway, my advice would be to go ahead and set it all up, get a friend's MC server loaded up on it, and then find all the problems and learn from them. 

 

Also you'll want to learn to be humble about your skills, NOBODY want's to work with, or do business with "that guy"

Hi, I've done Minecraft hosting (for myself and friends not on large scale or anything crazy) for 4 years now, and honestly your internet is shit. Your specs look okay but you might want to do some research on how other major hosts do it. You'll also be competing with all of those hosts so unless your price is like $3/mo with better internet among many other things I wish you luck dude. Do what the post above me by DanTheMuffinMan said. Experience is key with this stuff. Host your own MC server for a while and then try and get stuff moving. 

 

P.S. Your ISP won't like you running a business from your home connection. My guess is that you have Comcast/Xfinity. You would need to upgrade to Business Class (Lost more money) and get multiple IPs (more money). But, I still wish you luck with this adventure. It's not bad for a 15 year old honestly. I wish I had this stuff like 4 years ago when I started my Minecraft hosting endeavor.

As a student in college for network engineering at the moment, specifically with Cisco and a minor in Microsoft Server Administration, and being in the course for two years, with two additional years of real-world experience, let me be the first to tell you that you are not as wise as you think. Your infrastructure is not as secure as you think. If you truly want to excel in a career of network engineering, you must treat every single scenario as completely insecure. Even if you are using the most secure technology there is in existence.

 

I highly recommend taking a class in Healthcare IT when you get to your college days. HIT has some of the most secure networks that exist, due to the extreme confidentiality of patient information. If you think you're good now, those courses ought to put you in your place. And just as @DanTheMuffinMan said, learn to be more humble. While I want to wish you the best, the fact that you're coming off as cocky is preventing me from doing so. I know how tough the course is, I know how difficult the entire field can be. People take security very seriously, and those same people take the level of cockiness you have as ignorance (which it is), and will distrust you enough to look to other alternatives, even if you are more than capable. There is such a thing as being over confident. I've lost one internship and several freelance jobs for being too confident.

Yeah, good point, as soon as you're using your internet connection for a commercial operation you'll have to switch to commercial internet, MAJOR hassle. And very damn expensive, it's probably better in Toronto, but even an A-DSL business connection can run you hundreds of dollars a month in my area.
