HTPC software for beginners?

I have a spare core 2 dou laying around 3gb ram, and was wondering if I could manage a htpc out of it...well I think that should be fine actually, but I'm not experienced with hTPC software,

Would you guys recommend xbmc, plex or something else totally different?

*note: I don't know what I really want to do with this htpc, but I do have a somewhat large digital movie collection, and tons on disk. If it could download things with plex for me that would be great, but if i need a server pc for that then that is out of the question at the moment.  *I DO NOT have cable or a tv tuner*

Thanks for the help in advance, cheers :D
