Need a New Laptop for College($1000)

NDNPwn

Hey fellow computer bros! I need a new laptop for college and can't seem to find the perfect one for me. I thought yall can help me out :P I usually use my laptop to go on the internet and read/ watch videos. I also download movies a lot, through mischievous ways..., and stream them over the air to my ps3 and ipad. It needs to have at least a 1080p screen. I need a laptop which is fast and portable. I would prefer if it was thin/ light because I am going to use it in college and carry it around everywhere. It needs to have a ssd or be able to upgrade to a ssd cause duhh. And be aesthetically pleasing under $1000. The only computer I'm looking at right now is the Asus UX305 but I don't know if it will preform that well with multitasking. Thanks for the help :D

Just noticed the huge price differences, might be around 1000 bucks where you live.

So many things I could write here... things like this.

If you're not gaming, I would just get a MacBook. Yes, they might be overpriced but they are crazy thin and have a very long battery life.

If you can buy a MacBook Pro 13" through the Apple Education store do it, because you're going to get much better battery life than what you'd get with a cheaper laptop. Of course if the Education discount is not sufficient for you to be able to afford the rMBP 13" then by all means go for the one of the Asus laptops, or if you need the extra boost for graphics.

Wow you can do that?

Macs are just PCs with a different OS

Specs: 4790k | Asus Z-97 Pro Wifi | MX100 512GB SSD | NZXT H440 Plastidipped Black | Dark Rock 3 CPU Cooler | MSI 290x Lightning | EVGA 850 G2 | 3x Noctua Industrial NF-F12's

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it

I'm typing this on the UX 305, and I absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems at all. Love this thing, actually found myself using my desktop, which I love, less and less. It's great. feel free to ask me any questions!

If you are not really gaming, get the Surface Pro 3.

Powerful system with a Core i5 CPU, great battery life, thin and light, no need your iPad anymore.

A nice 2160x1440 IPS display, multi-touch, and the most important part, digitizer pen. Not the silly iPad pens.. No this is the real deal. Thin point, high precision, pressure sensitivity tracking, and palm rejection pen. You'll love the fact that you can type your notes, and use the pen for graphs, diagrams, circle, highlight, add math equation in the middle of your notes, and so on. Got a math class? you can do it all on it. No more need of note book. And all this is possible with the OneNote, which you have for free as student (you actually have Office 365 for free. Contact your school for more information, or if they don't manage it, you can go here: https://products.office.com/en-us/student/office-in-education).And yes, you can draw with the pen. It uses N-Trig technology, and even if you use old software that doesn't support Windows 8 Ink API, you can get WinTab drivers for it, and now it works perfectly with pressure sensitivity.

The Surface Pro 3 typing experience is really good for a small form factor system, the main reason is that the keyboard is almost the same size as a normal desktop keyboard, and doesn't have any missing keys. They are all there, even print screen (Fn + Space). Except for the insert key. It doesn't like you. :P But I don't think it is a problem. But you can always remap it: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToMapAnInsertKeyOnYourSurfacePro3Keyboard.aspx

I programmed hours on end on it, no problem, was easy and fast to get used to.

Anyway, it has a full size USB 3.0 port. I taught it would be limiting, but rarely it is an issue. But if you need to plug multiple things, any cheapo USB hub will fix that. For me I use it for my mouse when I do more serious work. Printing I have a network printer. USB flash drive, well it's fine it has a good touch screen and decent track pad. Not the best by far, but not the worst by far. I have experienced FAR far worse.

I have the Surface Pro 2, and I wish that device came out when I started university. It is the device I always want, as at the time convertible where super thick, 3000$ for the ones where you won't fight with the pen, sooooooooo sllllllloooooow system, thick, heavy, really poor battery life (4h only 6 with a big stretch).

I highly recommend it. The Surface Pro 4 is expected to come soon, as I see Microsoft making specials on the Surface Pro 3. So this indicates that they are trying to empty their stock. I don't know when. For sure after Windows 10 is released to highlight the OS. My guess is that it will have a second USB port, probably USB Type-C for charging and using. Full size USB port will remain, as this is kinda the selling feature of the device.

If it doesn't come out by August, I expect to be released in October with Intel Skylake CPU, which would be awesome.

All to say, that I HIGHLY recommend you have a look at it. You can find the device in many big retail stores like BestBuy, and of course Microsoft store. Keep in mind that you can get a 10% discount on everything (device and it's accessories like the keyboard) through Microsoft Online and offline store as a student.

What is cool with the Surface Pro 3, if you plan to stay in College dorm, is that you have Mini DisplayPort with daisy chain support. So you can plug a USB hub which has a full desktop keyboard and mouse, and an external display, or if you buy daisy chaining compatible display, you can have 2 displays out of that 1 plug on the device. Real cool.

If you need more storage, you have a microSD card slot under the kick-stand, so that you can put a card in, and doesn't interfere with anything and you can leave it there.

Here are 2 nice, non-bias, fair review videos.

First one compares the device with the MacBook, and the second one is a full review of the device.

If you check the channel, you can find more comparison between different devices, including Surface Pro 3 against other systems. It is worth a look. Even if you don't care about the Surface Pro 3, it is a nice review site.

While I don't have the Surface Pro 3, I have the Surface Pro 2 revision 2, which has the same internal specs. If you have any questions, just ask.
