NAS or home server?

I'm looking into buying a Nas/ Home server for my family to back up their computers to, and to stream our movie collection from. I need to know if I will be able to do this with just a NAS or do I need a home server for what I need to do. In our basement we have a Samsung SmartTV which I think I can stream content from, and if it doesn't then I'll just use my PS3. I also plan on streaming to my laptop if I want to watch movies. But what I really need to know is what is my best option to do this? Any help would be very appreciated!
