If and when I need to change my CPU thermal paste?

I've been using my PC for about a year and a quarter now and the pathetic stock Intel heatsink has been sitting on top of my CPU for the whole time, never removed it, nor changed the paste (the original pre-applied Intel thermal compound that came with the heatsink). If and when is the time to reapply the thermal compound for my CPU?

Thanks.

When temperatures are looking poor then it is time to look at changing the thermal paste.

Whenever temps seem to be abnormally high.

Maybe 3-10 years depending on conditions

When your temps are illogically high and system is suffering from random shutdowns. Then...

There's always a way...

Thanks for the replies! In not sure this is abnormal, but I ran prime95 for about 8 mins and my i5 4570 hit ~86°C. I'm taking into consideration that this is the stock heatsink so but I'm not sure if this is stable/normal.

Those results are not abnormal for that CPU when using Prime95. Prime95 is not recommended for stress testing Haswell CPU's, use Intel's XTU or AIDA 64

Desktop:     Core i7-9700K @ 5.1GHz all-core = ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate = 16GB HyperX Predator DDR4 @ 3600MHz = Asus ROG Strix 3060ti (non LHR) = Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD = ASUS PG279Q

Notebook:  Clevo P651RG-G = Core i7 6820HK = 16GB HyperX Impact DDR4 2133MHz = GTX 980M = 1080p IPS G-Sync = Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 SSD + Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD

You will need to change it every so often. Better thermal paste lasts longer. Stock Intel paste will be good for a few years. Eventually it dry out and become dust like, but even with crappy paste that takes years

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB
