MacBook switch-over

waggythegeek

I am trying DESPERATELY to get my dad to switch over to windows machines. Like most here, I respect Macintosh operating systems, but not anything else about the system. There is no way my dad will do a hackintosh, plus he needs a laptop. he currently is planning on buying the MacBook Air 11". Can anyone recommend a windows machine with equivalent specs? He wants it to be tiny.

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

XPS 13 or the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro (which is actually smaller and thinner than the MacBook Air and has a higher resolution display)

Dell are the closests you will get to macs in windows. However, take my word, it is not and will never be easy to convience parents to switch platforms, it's not easy for them to learn technological concepts like us.

learned this when my dad went to google and searched, "intel i3 or i5 processor"

well the differences between mobile i3,i5 and i7 are so subtle and minimal, that google might be a good start.

It's a 13" laptop with the footprint of an 11" MacBook Air, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Why do you want him to switch? If he's comfortable with a macbook, why not stick with it? Also Apple makes the best trackpad, which in my opinion is the most important aspect of the notebook experience. I would rather use the Apple trackpad than plugging in a mouse.

If he wants a MBA 11", let him get one. It'll certainly last a hell of a long time and has commendable battery life and is built well for carrying around.

I don't get the perverse need that some people have to "switch people over" when they've made it clear they aren't that interested. You're not the one using it, you don't get to decide what priorities people place in what they want, what they value and what they are paying for.

I think spending 500k on a home and NOT getting hardwood floors is pants on backwards stupid and would never get a home without hardwood floor but its not my 500k and its not my home, nor do I know what use case the home will have. So I don't judge what others do with their money.

Its a laptop. Who cares.

Have fun with the family tech support if you make him switch over.

MacBook Airs are wonderful ultrabooks and competitively priced. If your dad wants one let him get one. He's an adult with his own money he can do what he damn well pleases.

My cousins needed a new computer. Uncle is tech illiterate and just doesn't care, which is totally fine and respectable. Not everyone wants to understand tech or even cares about it.

Cousin needs it for university going forward and just needs something capable and reliable.

Got them a refurb MBA, saved 300 bucks, they've got a laptop that'll last for years with no fuss AND has physical retail support should things go wrong. Which is far better than anything else on the market. People don't buy cars that they can't service in their own city, why buy a laptop which you'll use just as much if not more without having a local place for emergency situations?
