Is Ubuntu good?

Well I'm fixing up some old PCs and I need an OS that is free. Ubuntu is the best that is reviewed. What do you guys think of this OS?

I like it.  Hardcore Linux people don't like it as much as more powerful ones like Red Hat or Debian.  But for looks, and general use I love it.

Ubuntu is one of the, shall we say, friendlier Linux distributions. It's pretty nice to use, but I prefer standard Debian or Arch.

Debian is very similar to Ubuntu. But yeah, Red Hat is a different story.

i have used it a good amount has the most support out of the free Linux versions, i personal like Linux Mint more, by default it has more of a windows feel, while by default Ubuntu feels like mac. Mint is based off Ubuntu so everything that runs on Ubuntu runs on mint.

I still will take linux over anything else other than Windows and OS X.

Tbh I found the layout of Ubuntu Mate a little easier to use since it's got a more traditional menu system instead of the gesture-ish metro-ish thing of the original Ubuntu with that Unity interface. Mate is based off the classic grub2 which was a great desktop environment.

I recently was trying to get into Linux and Ubuntu is the distro I chose to go with. It seems that there are a lot of Ubuntu specific questions that a beginner might have that have been answered on the Ubuntu forums. 

 

Regular Ubuntu comes with the desktop environment (DE) Unity, but a lot of people like the Gnome DE. I tried the regular Ubuntu 14.04 and haven't really run into any major problems, and have enjoyed customizing it.

Very good unless you hate the Unity desktop menu then you better off with Linux Mint. =S

Ubuntu is probably one of the worst excuses for a linux operating system that has ever come to fruition--as are any distros derived from it (for the most part) like Mint, etc.

 

Unity is a sad excuse for a Desktop Env. and the amount of crap that Canonical loads onto that "OS" is hilariously sad and upsetting.

 

Do yourself a favor, burn your ISOs of Ubuntu (like with fire), and install Debian.

- Ubuntu w/Unity desktop (standard Ubuntu) = perfect for Linux beginner but not so good for older pc...

 

How old is your old PC ? if it's anything like 2-5 years old it's fine but I suggest something lighter for older

machines, like Debian with Xfce desktop environment, or if you really want Ubuntu, go with Xubuntu instead.

It's less resource hungry and feel "snapier" or faster... 

 

Mint is another very user friendly distro, the regular version w/ Cinnamon desktop looks like Windows

but you can choose between 4 different desktops...

 

- What I suggest is install VirtualBox on you main PC (super easy, it takes less than a minute), install at least 4 or 5

Linux distros on it, and try them all before you do the "final" install.

emachines EL1300-o2w, Athlon 2650e @ 1.6 ghz (single core) upgraded it to 2 gigs ddr2 from the 1 gig it came with. Put Linux LXLE on it and installed the nvidia driver for the onboard graphics and it runs like a champ

Ubuntu is good, but I would argue against using it for beginners, it's interface is nothing like what most users are comfortable with and some people will be very intimidated by it to the point of being scared to use it. I would say using something like Linux Mint or Kubuntu/Xubuntu for something that will be more like Windows in look.

I'm a huge fan of Mint cause it sets up everything you need by default, such as flash player, MP4 and MP3 playback and it looks more like Windows than Ubuntu does. I believe it even enables the firewall by default so that's one less thing you need to do.

I started with Ubuntu and it was really good at the time, but it has slowly gotten less and less stable and getting MP4 playback and MP3 playback was a total crapshoot, sometimes it worked, but most of the time it would seem to install correctly but then nothing would play and WiFi didn't work half the time either, so just be aware of that.

I would say its the easyiest to use linux based os and is great for the average user. If you are already know a lot about *nix systems I suggest you stick to debian, fedora, or centOS.(depending on what your doing). Its not bad but many thing annoy me about how they have set it up(paid amazon links in unity, lots of advertising for their own services like landscape, too much purple and orange(but can be fixed with other desktop enviros).

I'm fine with Ubuntu but I will use default unity as it is noticeably too heavy for what it is. But I will take lubuntu or kubuntu any day when running it.

You didn't give any evidence as to why you think it's bad. Whether or not you like the desktop environment is subjective, and I don't know what you're talking about when you say that Canonical loads crap onto Ubuntu.

 

I like Ubuntu. Unity is very user friendly. It's easy to get started with and is mostly hassle free.

Ubuntu is very user friendly. but i personly do NOT like the unity interface myself.

I would recommend ubuntu gnome or elementary os. both use ubuntu under that hood.
