Fan makes a rubbing noise?

byalexandr

Hey guys!

I'm trying to install a red LED fan I had lying around (120mm) and when I plug it in, it works fine and doesn't make any noise. But sometimes when I turn it on, I start rumbling and making a rubbing noise, especially when it is mounted on the case. The fan blades aren't touching anything, and I don't think it's the bearings as it's working silently while not in the case. Any advice on what I can do? I really want to use this fan to light up my case a bit.

Oh, case is an N200 from Cooler Master. I just modded it and put in a new polycarbonate side window. Looks dark in there and I thought a fan would help light it up just a bit.

If it's not rubbing anything it might be a bearing problem, sometimes it will go away if it's brand new but most of the time it will persist. There isn't much that can be done usually, sometimes behind the sticker you can add a drop of oil onto the bearing to see if that helps at all.

Make sure the fan is securely mounted and not moving around in it's mount or vibrating.

How well did it go? I was thinking of adding a side window to my N200 as well.

Great actually! I will post some pictures on my build log tomorrow or whenever I can. I suggest using a jigsaw with a fine metal blade instead of a dremel, though. The first cut I made was with a dremel and it came out really wavy. The rest came out like it came with the case.

Oh, I fixed it... Or it fixed itself? I don't know, but it's working fine now. Maybe it just needs to be run in some more?

I had the same issue with an 80mm fan that I ghetto mounted in between the holes of the top fan mount (cause a 120 won't fit alongside a Hyper 212 EVO and my motherboard). Same thing happened as well. It sounded like it was hitting something but it wasn't. I loosened the screws (didn't even remove the fan), tightened them again, and suddenly the fan was fine. O.o
