Low speed on wired PS4 connection.

pschwaab

Hey everybody, I have tried positing in a bunch of different places and I haven't got good answers. Tried calling various support numbers, and haven't gotten anywhere. I have super low speed on my PS4 internet. I use a 100 ft Ethernet cable to ensure the best possible speed on my 50 MBPS Internet, and I plug that Ethernet cable into my computer and get the expected 50 MBPS download 5 MBPS upload, but when I plug that cord into my ps4 I get 7-8 Mbps download and less then 1 Mbps upload. Anyone have any idea why that might be? It makes it so downloads are much slower, and I can't start share play.

Get a PC. Jk, restart you router. Maybe that will help.

Thats very odd, mine is connected wireless though so idunno (no issues). i´d check your router setting. maybe some weird setting is turned on, but if you reset it already then its not the Router because ive never heard default settings ever cause issues.

Seeings as its no problem with your PC, i wonder if your Ethernet port on the Ps4 is damaged somehow, Can you use wireless?

Btw, what are you using to measure your Speed on the Ps4?

Wireless results in almost the same speed. I've reset the router several times, that doesn't seem to help. I also get this issue with my PS3. It has very low speeds as well.

does the connection on your PS4 say "wired"?

Well in that case its a probably a Sony server issue, Do you live in the States? Because based on other users location who have the same issue, as far as i can tell everyone is American....

so this could mean two things:

ISP throttling Sony servers

Oooor Sony servers just suck in America.

It does say wired. And I do live in the states. Idaho. Yeah, I haven't been able to find any reason why it is so bad... But this is the best internet that is offered here, and yet I can't do share play.

Yes. Same cable. As listed above, it tested at 50 Mbps on the PC, but only around 7 on ps4.

I'm using the built in PS4 speed test when you set up the Internet. However, even if that wasn't accurate, it says my internet is too slow to start share play, and I experience connectivy issues frequently. So I don't know why that might be... I have asked around, and I know other people experience slight downgrades, but not this bad, and not enough to make share play unusable.

you should do a speedtest on your computer and post the results.

It's most likely that your NAT is causing the issue. Did you open the ports that PS4 needs, on your router? If not you should, check this tutorial. Basically what you need to do is make sure that your PS4 says in the Network Status NAT: Type 2. Type 3 is bad and most likely what you are getting and Type 1 is not secure and not recommended.

For example @ home I have 40/40 Mbps internet connection. And on my PS 3 I get around 55/20 Mbps with NAT: Type 2 and if I close all the ports I get 12/7, see the difference?

Like I said, I did, but here's a picture just so it is easier to see. When I plug my ethernet cord into my Macbook Pro, this is what I get.

When I immedietely unplug it from the computer, and plug it into the PS4, I get this

I gave this a shot, I opened up all those ports,

Then I ran the speed test again, and got the same exact speed I got before. My NAT type was already Type 2, so I'm not sure changing that helped unfortunately.

These are the rest of the settings it shows on my PS4.

It could be the location of the PS4 Speedtest server. Ookla's speedtest finds the closest one and so it will give you the most accurate results. I would guess the PS4 one is much farther away or is being overloaded. a 100 foot ethernet cable should not be a problem as 1 gigbit ethernet should be good too 100 meters. However I have seen some network cards that are lower powered struggle on ethernet cables over 50feet. This is rare anymore but is still possible. If you can login to your router and see if it shows your PS4 is connected at 1gig and full duplex.

I'm not sure how I would log in to the router to check that. If it just told me it was a low speed, but worked at 50 MPBS or even like 30 it would be fine. But when I try to start shareplay I get the message that my internet speed is too low. I don't know where in my Modem settings I could see if my PS4 is getting the full connection, didn't see a setting for that earlier, I have an Arris modem/router.

It may not be an option many consumer grade routers don't show it. If it has a LAN status or ethernet status it may have it. if not you could plug one end into PS4 and the other into the PC and see what it comes up at on the PC.

Another thing that comes to mind are DNS servers. Try using something like 8.8.8.8 for primary and 209.244.0.3 for secondary DNS. You should give Sony a call see if they can help you changing the region server or something.

Have you tried to connect a pc, like a laptop or something, on the PS4 cable and check the internet speed?

Im pretty sure the reason you have that speed diference is that test server for the internet speed, while speedtest does on the closest, the PS4 could be using one further away from sony or something. If it was a cable limitation, your result would be something around 8.1Mbs download and 5.54Mbs upload but cleary it isnt. You have almost 4 times less internet speed and Im confident that its where its being tested and not an issue with the connection it self.

Is there a specific program I am supposed to use to do that? I use a mac, so preferably one mac friendly, though I do have bootcamp.

If you look above, I did a speed test where I unhooked the ethernet cord from the PS4 and plugged it into a PS4 and got 56 MBPS down and 5 MBPS up while I only got like  7 down 512 KBPS up on PS4. The issue is, even if the speed test may not be accurate, I cannot use the PS4 to do shareplay, downloads are slow, and online play is laggy. So it is definitely not using my full internet speed.

 mD9uSBN.jpg

that's what I get when I try to start shareplay.

Did that, I got this.

So that does report faster, (still not 50 MBPS like on the computer however) but it doesn't really matter, because downloads are still slow, online play is laggy, and I can't start shareplay.

I have actually tried that. I tried originally using google's, then using some other ones, open something or other, but that didn't help. Actually made it slower. Have given Sony a call, and they couldn't figure out how to do anything to help me and pointed to the ISP as the problem, called the ISP and they pointed to Sony as the problem, neither could figure this out.
