Pentium g3258 Overclocking

How much can I push the pentium g3258 with the h81m-DGS, stock cooler?

I heard u can OC to 4.7ghz or 4.8

None of us have any clue, it depends on the silicon lottery. Mine can do 4.4 GHz stable (in both stress testing and long gaming sessions) on the stock cooler on my H81 board at 1.18V, but based on what I have read from others it sounds like mine is an above average chip.

I saw a vid on it and 4.2 should be easy out of the box. Have u tried 4.4+

My friends gets 4.3GHz stable on a hyper 212 evo. It's all about luck.

But that's with a dedicated cooler :( at least I know I can get it to 4ghz no problem.

Your friend should bump it up to 4.7 since that cooler is really good

4.5 GHz was a no go, as my board only allows up to 1.2V vcore. Board is a Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V rev 1.0. Don't buy newer revisions of Gigabyte boards though, apparently they're cheaping out on them. 4.2 is by no means guaranteed, I have seen people who struggle to get 3.8 even.

We've tried to bump it up. If we go to 4.4 it starts to crash during games. I guess he wasn't very lucky in the silicon lottery (I love that phrase)

Overclocking is always dangerous, but doesnt mean you cant know what you're doing to prevent killing of the chip or mobo. 

 

I personally think with non-Z series boards you should keep from running too much voltage. I wouldnt run more than 1.3V, The mobo VRM is what you need to worry about on these low-end boards.

 

A stock cooler will only be good under so much voltage, its not really the Frequency that makes the heat, its the voltage. You'll hit a temp wall pretty quick.

Yeah, you'll get to a point where the next 100 MHz of clockspeed requires big jumps in voltage (and thus temperature too).

Cooling isn't everything. It's mostly down to the chip these days with Intel; even a Hyper 212 can hold a 4790Ks max OC nicely.
