Picking out a wireless internet card

So, I have a few questions regarding wireless card that fit in PCI-Express x1

1. My router is an Action MI424WR from back in 2005 or something, verizon fios standard router, it's protocol is 802.11 b/g, does that mean I need something with that exact protocol or any card that supports b and g?

2. If my speed is 54 mbs per second on my router, does that mean even if I get a "faster" card it's limit will be pre determined by the router?

3. Is there ANYTHING I can do software wise to boost my speeds? Wired is not an option unfortunately
