Welcome to Linus Tech Tips! I would recommend reading the 2 Threads in my signature. They will give you some advice and rules for this forum. Don't forget to follow your topics. I would recommend an Intel Xeon for a game server, but I need your budget and location for some estimates.

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

You need to know what Arma 3 Server needs I mean, some gameservers will need more threads, others, high performance, and lastly some of them need more RAM... If you want the best for most of the cases, I would go for an I7 5820k overclocked... 12 Threads and High performance, also DDR4 for future enhance...

Maybe you can benchmark the Arma 3 needs in your own pc...

Hope it helps you ;)

If you want to go with cheap and decent server performance, you can buy an fx 83** cpu. While they suck at gaming anything higher than med res., they're okay for multi core tasks like cheap servers.

yeah. but theres like loads of different types on xeons and which one should i get like. one with lots of gigahertz or one with lots of cores? since the game is hard to run anyway.

from looking around, it seems like you'll want a decent performance cpu, but especially RAM, i've seen reports of admins putting their server on a ramdisk, giving performance a huge leap.

from reading around, i'd suggest getting something quad core, 16GB ram (of which 10-12 in a ramdisk for your server files)

also get some decently fast storage, and perhaps dig around in linux a bit.

I was reading on the arma forums that you want a six core xeon or better (and not a amd fx83XX as arma servers are not optimized for them) so I'd try snagging a Xeon X5680 off ebay.

another thing to consider is how much ram you will need, rule of thumb is 1GB of ram per player slot.

You could loose data though, you would have to back it up.

thats where the fast storage comes in, write away the ramdisk to HDD or SSD every few minutes.

Or you could steal Linus' SSDs and raid cards...

A Xeon, I'd recommend getting an older HP or Dell PowerEdge server from eBay or craigslist for cheap but check the specs and make sure they will give you the hard drives with it.
