[Q] WD Blue Maximum Write

Hi Guys,

Wanted to ask if anyone knows how long until the WD Blue HDD fails. I have the WD Blue 1TB that I use for recording AVI video files then re-encoding it to MP4 and some other stuff. Wanted to know if how much 'write' it can take before it completely fails. Bought it Last Year and It'll be 1 year old by next month.

Thanks

Nobody really knows because hard drives don't have a specific write amount they just die when they die. i've seen old 10 year old HDDs that still work as if they where brand new and new ones that have failed within a year. if you absolutely need reliability you need a enterprise drive since they are built to last. but keep in mind the more you use the drive the bigger of a chance it will die sooner but don't worry WD makes good drives and i haven't had one ever fail on me.

My WD caviar blue that is from early 2008 is still strong.

An HDDs lifespan isn't like an SSD.

As long as it can spin it's ok.

There's no way to determine how long a drive would really last, there are too many factors that can come into play.

Some would say 3 years or so but it can fail even as early as the first time you mishandle it.

But the warranty included with the drive should tell you a rough estimate of what the company expects on how long the drive should last.

Thanks for your opinion guys. Asking this since my first PC ever had a Hitachi 500gb drive which I used for storing stuffs and mkv videos before but failed after over 3 years. So I was wondering how long my HDD can last since I'm using it way more than my old drive.

Cheers

Hard drives generally last 3-5 years. Your best bet is to always have at least two hard drives and do backups. RAID is nice, but overkill. Backups do everything most people want RAID to do, and provide protection against 'stupid mistakes' like accidentally deleting files.

Thanks, I currently have 1 1TB WD Portable drive, probably a 2.5in size one forgot what it is for Backup but I'll probably get more soon just in case.
