Making my Ultimate ~$4000 build. This is Project Noir

All parts will be sourced in the US.

This PC will be used for Gaming, Video production, and Streaming. Some Cuda programming work may be included.

This is what I'm ready to pull the trigger on. Having a friend who works at intel to buy me the SSD and CPU helps a ton because I'm getting a 5960x for the price of a 5930k.

I do have a few questions/ need for feedback help. Are there good minimalistic cases out there that are good for watercooling? I intend to air cool this machine until I get a second Titan X at which point I will put the whole thing in a custom loop. I'm looking for an aesthetically pleasing case that requires minimal to no mod work for watercooling. I'm not a fan of huge drive cages.  This is why I picked the Define S, but that's subject to change.

I am sticking to a pure black/white build. Hints of color are okay, as I'm deciding to call this Project Noir.

Also, I am deciding to go between either the pci-e or the 2.5 inch versions of the intel 750 ssd. I heard there are problems and bottlenecks going with the m.2/hyper kit route due to most m.2 slots using the PCH and bottlenecking the performance of the SSD? but does anyone know if that's the case on the X99-Deluxe?

I am looking to get a simple but nice mechanical keyboard (after testing around, I seem to like Browns the most).  I already have a nice gaming mouse.

I am also looking to get a nice monitor.  ultra-wide or 4k are nice options I'm considering, though Gsync seems also pretty awesome.  Thoughts/recommendations?

Please let me know if you have any concerns and issues.

Thanks!

Just a comment on your storage: The WD Reds don't seem like they were really intended for your build (according to WD, they were more meant for NAS machines).  I would switch to WD blacks or straight-up blues.  I like the Corsiar K70 (not RGB).  The MX Brown model goes for anywhere between 109 and 129 USD.  NOTE: This keyboard is just MY preference, and does NOT mean that everyone will like it or agree with me.  Peripherals are a very personal thing, and what you will like changes from person to person.

Looks Like I'm changing out the Reds to something else. I just changed the Reds to Blacks.

The Define R5 is a pretty good minimalistic looking case. Based on your budget, I think you should go with the R5 and not the S since the S is more of a budget case (your budget seems to be pretty big). I'm not entirely sure if there's R5s with windows, cause I'm guessing you'd want a window to show off all that hardware and watercooling, but if there is I'd recommend you go with that. I've watched other Youtubers use that case for custom watercooling and it worked out pretty well for them.

Another comment which other people have mentioned - don't use WD Reds for your storage. They weren't designed for the use case that you're going to use them for.

I haven't heard of any issues with the m.2 hyper kit causing any bottlenecks, but from the benchmarks I've seen from across the internet so far - there doesn't seem to be any issues with bottlenecking that I've heard of when using that kit as opposed to PCIe. I believe that Intel worked directly with Asus when designing their hyperkit so there shouldn't be any bottlenecks.

There's a monitor out there, the Acer XB270HU which is 1440p, has G-sync, IPS, and 144Hz - basically the perfect monitor out there right now for gaming. However, considering that you're planning to get 2 Titan Xs, you might wanna consider looking into something 4K since you'll actually have the horsepower to render all those pixels.

As for a keyboard - it doesn't really matter. A keyboard is just a keyboard to me and as long as it's mechanical and has MX browns I'm happy. Maybe take a look around and just see what you like - if you want RGB, some macro keys (idk what games you play), the size, etc.

Overall it looks like a really beast built - I wish you luck in the future when you (hopefully) build it!

Just a couple last comments though that aren't really important. It's kinda irking me that you're spending over $3500 on a computer but getting regular Windows 8.1. If you're spending that much money why not get Pro? Unless you're 100% sure you don't need the features in Pro. I also wouldn't mind making friends with people at Intel. Those are some really sick deals you're getting.

Edit: Here's a link to a review of the Acer XB270HU.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Is it weird of me to say that I have an irrational hatred of drive cages?  I just DONT like them.  I hate the entire look of them, and its full aesthetic.  The Define S, although budget oriented, is the best way to get rid of my irrational hatred.

I just switched from WD Reds to Blacks.

I'll do some work and research on some monitors including the one you linked.

I also just switched to a windows 8.1 pro license.

Thanks for your help @failblox

Hey there,

It's a very powerful and enthusiastic build! I would love to see some photos once it's done. :)

Regarding the storage, it really depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are planning on putting the two HDDs in RAID (any type) I would recommend to stick to WD Red as they are NAS/RAID class drives and have the additional features for more stable and safer performance in such conditions while WD Black drives lack such features.
If you are using them separately and need speed and higher performance - WD Black drives would be more appropriate.
WD Green drives would be good for secondary simple storage, cooler and more quiet performance and saving energy.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

AH, yes, Maybe I should have mentioned this.  I intended to keep the drives in RAID 1 for redundancy.  Unless the black drives are reliable enough to be kept un-raided, I could use one for storage and the other as a scratch drive for rendering.  @Captain_WD , What do you suggest?

Definitely go with an IPS panel as your are a content creator. For 1440p, XB2720HU, hands down.

For 4K, if IPS, Asus PB279Q (very pricey though)

if TN (they still have very good colour reproduction in this case), Asus PB287Q or Acer XB280HK
