TSA Thought my GPU was a bomb

docterkiwi

I was in the process of shipping my computer home from school and decided to take out the gpu because last time UPS broke my computer. (From the East coast of U.S. To the West coast) So i decided to take my GPU on the plane with me. So i had my keyboard, and two mice in my bag with clothes, headphones, etc and my GPU wrapped in a anti static bag. So they scan it throught the conveyor belt and immediately it was like the TSA agents went on red alert. They made me go to a room where they searched my bag and pulled it out. Now the gpu was a nvidia 770 SC with no back plate (i know never again getting without a backplate.) the guy poorly handled the graphics card and bent one of the the exhaust spoke things on the end of the card. But anyway that was def the biggest waste of my time ever they also swiped everything on my and in my bag for gun powder, including the card. I just thought it was kinda funny because i was some 16 year old kid just trying to take my computer part home. Oh and they searched everything on me including my shoes, shirt etc.

Just sharing an interesting story that just happened.

Steam:Drift and Drift_2 <p>(name is hunter) Lets play:)

You should have screamed when they touched the PCB about static, like it was a actual bomb and static would make it would go off.

That would have ended poorly

Next time buy a broken GPU and if they start again making a drama out of it you can start making cash of it.

You do realize that you can fly your PC with you if it is in a wood crate? You just pay slightly extra as it is considered cargo instead of luggage.

I've flewn equipment with me on a few occasions. I just basically bubble wrap everything and use packing peanuts. Most airlines have a 36 in^3 capacity for cargo transit. This nice part is that the equipment is with you throughout your entire flight(s).

Doing this may have saved you on shipping costs and would have prevented your ordeal.

Meh. I qualify for the TSA Pre check program. The less hassle for me, the better. In addition, the OP probably should have told the TSA what the GPU was and to be careful as it is a sensitive electronic device.

sure... If he wanted to be thrown in a cell for a few days because they obviously can't take a "joke" and be on a no-flight watch list for the rest of his life.

Never "joke" about terrorism when at a airport. Or anywhere else really..

@docterkiwi  Stop planning on blowing shit up.   Geez.  Punk kids.

Blowing stuff up is okay. If it's your own stuff.

Like old harddrives. I've done that before

Sue the TSA if the GPU doesn't work lol.

People have tried then when they've been molested by people who work for the TSA (because like there are laws against random cavity searches that are not observed at all) but there are processes protecting the anonymity of these people to prevent any kind of legal action.

So yeah. The rights you guys signed away in the name of counter terrorism...

'Murica.

Honestly that is one of the reasons I'd settle with Canada (even though France would be nice( r ), though they might be making that shift from pretty chill to like UK/US levels of "Peek-a-boo, you best not be doing something we don't like.") It's ridiculous how like US media (and maybe even British media) portrays all Muslims as vile people just because a small few do commit terrible crimes against those similar and dissimilar to themselves. From sheer experience I know this is not true and it's honestly depressing that a fairly large portion of the US and other places view a group of people that way. Granted I'm an Agnostic Atheist, it's just really annoying how people don't set aside differences and get to know someone different than themselves and live in pure arrogance and ignorance of their ways. 9 times out of 10 I bet you that if someone who was against marriage equality for same sex couples had a family member or loved one who was gay, I'm sure that person who was anti-marriage equality would see that this family member or this loved one isn't a deviant or an evil person. They're just different than oneself and that these differences should not be suppressed but accepted and maybe even celebrated. Another reason Canada seems attractive - The acceptance of difference and the celebration of difference. Whereas in the states, if you're not 100% like the rest of us then you don't deserve to be here.  But I think I sort of took this a tad bit off topic, so I do apologise for that. [Also I know I'm using the "real" way of spelling things not the awkward "American" way. (I.E I spell "Gray" - "Grey" though I do prefer "Gris")

The UK has some pretty bad ones too. But yeah I would be pissed if someone damaged my gpu for no good reason.
