AMH A399U - Should I?

xBlizzDevious

Hi everyone!

I've been looking at buying a 4k monitor since they were first announced but I've never seen one that fits what I need from a monitor.

I just happened to stumble across this: AMH A399U on a TekSyndicate Hardware video (since when did they have multiple channels?) and it looks quite good. It's certainly cheap enough, and Wendell says that it looks like a good IPS panel (which is what I'm used to).

I'm not overly fussed about Gsync or Freesync support, though I would like to try it - I can't without buying the hardware as the UK doesn't have shops like NCIX or anywhere that has stuff on display - so the lack of that doesn't really bother me.

I've currently got four 1080P monitors and use three in portrait 1080P and love the screen space, with the fourth as an auxiliary display. The 4K monitor would replace the 3x1080P portrait.

In the video, Wendell mentioned that there is a small amount of shadowing which, knowing me, would bother me but I'm sure I'd get used to it.

So basically, do you think I should risk the drawbacks and go for it? I was contemplating spending £600+ to get the type of screen I want and this is significantly under that.

TekSyndicate video here:

Thanks!

I've got a 3930k and three 7970s. It handles most things just great at 3240x1920 with the odd exception. I often don't use AA so that makes things a lot easier to run. I do play games, but more often than not I'm just playing FTB (heavily modded Minecraft) so meh. I do plan on upgrading to a Titan X or something along those lines at some point - I just don't like the price of the Titan X and the 390X might be as good for 1/3 of the price.

It's not that I don't have a limit on how much to spend - I'm just not very good at actually spending my money. I think things over too much and never buy things. Haha! I was going to watercool my PC at some point - never got around to it because I kept on thinking about this and that with it. I can afford the monitor and it seems to tick the boxes, but I want to make sure before I go ahead with it.

I don't do much in the way of editing or professional work that needs high colour accuracy, it's just that I switched from an Asus TN from a number of years ago to a Dell IPS three years ago and I can NEVER switch back to crappy colour reproduction. I like good monitors - and I can't stand crap ones.

Id say no.

You can see in the video that it flickers like mad all the time.... your eyes will burn out of your skull in a few months with that garbage.

A flicker free IPS monitor is what you want, and as big a size and resolution as you can get.

The 3440x1440 resolution ones are super sweet for work and gaming. And they are all flicker free IPS, except for the samsung with that resolution... its a VA which might or might not be bad.

Well... I went for it before you posted this. It arrived two days ago and it - although is nowhere near as amazing colour-wise as my IPS panels - it was amazing having such a large screenspace, no bezels and a reasonable look to it. Unfortunately, I was just playing a game and there was a minor graphical glitch - I assumed (and hoped) that it was my computer and that a restart would solve it but nope. This is what the monitor looks like now:

As such, I've sent an email to the seller and requested a return on their Ebay page. We shall see how it goes.

Hi Blizzdevious did you have any luck with the return? I too have been staring daily at the eBay listing and can't bring myself to commit, even though wendel said. He liked it.

I currently use a dell 3008wfp and am itching to go to. 40 inch 4k 60hz monitor.

Hello! I've been speaking to the seller and they have offered a refund. Ebay told me to speak to the seller to get a label for sending back and I've been waiting for a response from that. They said that they should have it by today. We shall see.

As a warning, I kind of feel like I'm being played around a bit so if you get any issues, don't expect a swift replacement. I think you'd be better off just going with something more reliable in the first place. The likes of the Acer, Asus and BenQ 4k, IPS, 32" panels are what I'd suggest and what I'm looking in to. The Acer and BenQ are both around £670 and the Asus is over £900. Not as cheap - but then you're getting good build quality, an IPS panel and no screwing around when you get an issue - assuming you use a good retailer.

I have the monitor too. been about 4 days, the DP cable that came with it shat on me it would work in all res's except 4k 60hz 4:4:4 or 4:2:0, so i bought a new one and it works flawlessly so far. windows and chrome do have some glitches tho ( random black boxes while browsing. But it mouses over so its not the display. I am trying to get a replacement DP from them since i had to buy locally and it cost me 25$. I personally would recommend it , I have 0 problems with the actual monitor so far and with a 290x I can run the Black Ops III beta at around 40fps on every highest settings.

Go ahead man. I'd say go with it. Its a great monitor and i dont see any issues with it , exept the shadowing on the edges but its not really an issue since you only see it while browsing the web and you have two massive white pillars on the sides.
