[MOD] LGA771 to LGA775 CPU modification tutorial

harrynowl

As long as the RAM is rated for at least 800MHz (for 400MHz), it will be fine (667MHz for 333MHz). And as long as the motherboard officially supports the target FSB speed there should be no stability issues. You shouldn't need to do anything in the bios, however if the overclock is unstable then you'd need to go into the bios to manually increase the core voltage.

But it's very likely a Q6600 could step to 333 with default voltages as long as it not a bad binned chip?

Yes, since the default setting is auto it shouldn't need to be adjusted as motherboards can increase it automatically to a certain amount if need be. It varies between motherboards so it really comes down to how good the motherboard actually is as to how well it adjusts the CPU's voltage.

  • 3 weeks later...

Got a Asus P5KPL-AM EPU coming along with a Xeon X3210 to try in it.

Will be fun to mess around with even though it isn't the best board by any means, may use it to try a 771 conversion. Should be fun either way.

that Xeon is 65nm and its 775 and clocked really slow. Its going tto be pretty slow tbh

I know, its a Q6600 with a 8x multiplier instead of 9x. It's more just to test a LGA775 Xeon in a Board that doesn't officially support it.

Might be a good candidate for a Pad Mod which would jump it to 2.66GHz, just over a stock Q6600.

Just looking for something fun to mess around with.

Ultimately, I'd like to do the 771 to 775 mod and get a X5450 (or better) into this board. Just have to find one that isn't grossly overpriced.

I guess it might depend where you are buying from.

X5260 dual cores are like £6 on eBay and X5450s are between 15-20. Plus like £2 for the sticker.

Still less than a SLACR Q6600 :P

I was referring more to the X5470 then X5450, people want $50+ USD for them!

That's why you play with the last gen stuff (or last, last, last gen stuff...) :D

Random question...

Can you pad mod the X5450? Or is pad modding only for LGA775 processors?

Yeah you can.

The pinout on the CPU is the same apart from the two you need to use the sticker to switch for the mod.

Well now, that makes things interesting as the board will supposedly handle a 1600 FSB : https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P5KPLAM_EPU/specifications/

A reviewer on Newegg had his at 1574MHz running a Q9505.

I'd buy a board more worthy of a top tier Yorkfield-12M CPU.

Eh, it's really just for messing around. Though a X5450 @ 3.6GHz might well outrun my G3258@4.2GHz in multithread and some games.

Oh it smokes it. Quite badly.

I got like 344 Cinebench with Pentium. Almost 500 with Xeon :D

I would try get an entry level P45 board though. They are around $60-80 USD.

Yeah depending on how it goes I might switch around what's in my main rig, but I'll worry about that later.

Quick search on the bay and the majority of the P45 boards listed are coming out of china. Any idea as to why?

Potentially old warehouse stock, or lots of electronic scrap goes to china.

At least they're kind and give you a 30 day warranty, half of which it'll spend in a e-packet being shipped...
