Error while updating android - HTC One M7

1Scotty1
Go to solution Solved by Geralt,

Today it popped up and I got the same error :( I wanted to do it manually but cant even get to stock recovery... I press vol.down+power, enter recovery but onscreen is just the red triangle and no recovery menu :(

Hmm looks like you gotta do a full RUU back to stock again. Do the GPE RUU found on XDA and it should either ask you when going through the initial setup or after the initial setup, you go to about phone and search for software update manually. Then afterwards, restore your data again.

You can do an adb backup and adb restore if you want.

adb backup -apk -all -f backup.ab

And

adb restore backup.ab

The red triangle actually means you're on stock recovery but other stuff like Xsposed or anything related to root might stop the OTA so a fresh RUU might do the trick. Backup your data with the adb command before RUUing and restore it only after taking the update.

Report back after you've updated and good luck. :)

Hello, friends

so yesterday I got a notification on my M7, that an Android update is ready to install. It was around 281Mb. I am currently running on 5.0.1 (Google Play Edition), the update downloaded successfully, then I went ahead with the reboot and installation and during the installation I got a red warning triangle with "Error" and I had to force reboot.

After that I went to start the update again, but now it shows my system is up-to-date, but it is still on 5.0.1

Any ideas as to why this happened, and why there is no longer the option to re-download and install the update?

Thanks

Heyyo,

Do you have a Google Play Edition or did you S-Off and change your phone's ID to try and make it into a Google Play Edition? I've found that doing S-Off causes issues with a lot of OTA updates sadly...

If you're phone is modified? Try flashing TWRP to your recovery and then downloading the OTA and flashing it that way.

Yes, I S-OFFd mine and flashed a normal GPE ROM with OTA updates, and sucessfully changed the ID also... might be the cause

Thanks for the help, I can try your idea :) I have TWRP already, so will be easier :)

If you've flashed an untouched GPE ROM, you won't get native OTA using TWRP, as it's expecting to have stock recovery in order to update, therefore giving you the error.

Hey,

sorry for the late response, I got to flashing only yesterday. Downloaded it from the link you provided and tried to flash it through TWRP, but I got an error there also :( So I am still on 5.0.1

I don't think you should be taking an OTA update when you've modified your phone. If you want a full conversion, try this thread over at XDA.

The only thing you'll need is S-OFF and SuperCID.

That's weird.

With that RUU, it should totally convert your phone into a GPE with official OTA. Does your CiD display as 11111111?

Maybe try GOOGL001 as your CiD. See if it will accept an OTA. I assume official OTAs check your CiDs strictly to confirm it's a GPE device.

Edit: Just read back on your post. You said you have TWRP. OTAs only work on Stock Recovery. Maybe that's your problem?

Yeah I think it's the custom recovery that's stopping the OTA.

Rule of thumb when modding android devices is to not take OTAs when on Custom anything. ;)

Wish you luck!

It should pop up and you can take it since you're on stock recovery.

If you want it earlier, I think you can flash the 5.1 release on stock recovery. But you need to do some digging around. But yeah just wait for the OTA. It should pop up.

Hey, Cryptoxic

I am happy to inform you, that this idea of yours WORKED :) I downloaded the stock RUU from XDA (5.0.1 non-rooted), (previously I had rooted, that may have been the problem),

flashed it, and immediately after I booted up the phone I set it up, and downloaded the 5.1 update, installed without issues and now I am rocking the 5.1 GPE :)

Many thanks
